Hi guys. Me and my oldest bro have some problems with the LANconnection in my house. We've made a new connection all the way from my room at the attic towards the kitchen where my mom has her computer. We've tryed the connection first between my ethernetmodem and the computer of my mom and on the attic it works. We then put the computer of my mom downstairs and hooked it up on the line we put up to there and now it doesn't work.
Any ideas?
We do get the message now: restricted (translated from Dutch, not sure if it's correct) connection.

So basicly my internetconnection comes out of the livingroom (groundfloor), to the attic (second floor) and then from the attic (second floor) to the kitchen (groundfloor).

Edit it's not: restricted connection, but: partial connection or no connection

A Twig

normally means a prob with either the IP address's being out of sync.
or the subnet mask being different
or the workgroup name being different
Have you checked the TCP/IP properties for each PC to make sure they match up?

We've tryed the connection upstairs first, it was no problem (this was with a short LANcable).
We've the put up a new, longer cable from top to downstairs and with the same settings and same gate as before and now it gives the message: partial connection or no connection. So everything is the same except the new, longer cable.

Norm

Sure you got the right wireing config, straight or crossover.

I get the same error usually after I've messed about with the connections between my pc/router & modem. I'm reading right that you mums pc connects direct to the modem & not to our pc in some sort of network? if so then a restart of the pc & the router(in my case) usually sorts it out.

:hijack warning:

Norm, whats the diff between normal & crossed network cables?

A straight through is 568B wiring on both ends. A cross over has 568A on one end and 568B on the other :)

See here for more info.

My moms computer is directly connected to the modem yeah. Mine is on another port of the modem.

Norm: straight or crossed?
The wire works two ways right?

Edit: Thanks BB, my bro probably knows something to do with the site you've posted.

DuVeL,

My guess is that it is your long cable that is causing the problem. Suggest you check it first.

Take the short cable that you know works and look at the order of the coloured leads in each end.

If it is a straight through cable then when you hold the two ends side by side in the same orientation then the colours will be in the same order.

If it is crossed then pairs 2 and 3 will be swapped.

Once you have confirmed that the short cable is straight or crossed then take it to each end of your long cable in turn and check that your long cable has the same cable order. if it has then it may be that some of the connections in the cable are duff (not made properly)

If this is the problem then I suggest you may want to pay for flight tickets for me to bring my crimping tool and plugs over to cut off the end of said cable and rewire correctly.   :D

I shall of course be requiring long nights and days spent in a certain 'red light' district to overcome the stress caused from replacing said plugs aboe, i said.

Thanks BlueBall, I think we can take it from here.
He's going to get a little meter which checks the incoming things aswell.

Cheers fellas.

It depends what you plug it into.

To connect 2 PCs together with a cat5 cable and no hub/switch you need a crossover.

To connect a PC to a HUB or switch you normally use a straight.

To connect a hub or switch to a switch (called a cascade) you might use a straight or crossed depending on the ports available.

However, many more modern switches have what is called autoMDI/X ports which can determine if the cable plugged into it is straight or crossed and reconfigure itself accordingly.

Edit for punctuation :)

What he means is, don't worry, it'll be fine. Seriously. No-one *ever* had a problem with cabling at a LAN.
