My mobile contract is coming to an end so I can finally chuck my a835 brick into my cupboard and get something better, ...only I'm having a dilemma as to which phone (...and provider) is worth the money.

Currently I am looking at 2 or 3 phones and/or 2 or 3 price-plans...
I'll either stick with "3" for the cheap prices, or move to vodafone for a better (?) company.

Mtorola V3 on vodafone for approx £19 per month for 200 minutes and 100 sms
for: thin, metal-alloy, nice-flat-style.
against: vodafone seems more expensive, possibly buggy motorola software, not enough sms for the price

nokia 6230 on vodafone for £13.50 per month with 200 mintues and 100 sms on vodafone
for: fm radio, nokia reliability?
against: bland-looking nokia, maybe not as interesting as the others, not enough sms for the price

Motorola a1000 on three for £20 per month with 750 minutes and 150 sms
for: almost a PDA, lots of functionality, proper smart phone, oads of minutes included
against: not quite a PDA, possibly buggy, might be tricky to write sms on the move with the touchscreen, have to cope with the three network

LG8130 on three at £8.33 monthly 100 min 300sms
for: cheap! almost perfect calls/sms for me
against: the lg8120 is a very buggy mobile, this is not hugely different, have to cope with the three network

I'm after a phone that has a decent calender/alarm function, and has a good battery life (few days without charging?) and is available on a contract which includes about 200sms and 100 minutes (any more a bonus) I would prefer vodafone, but three still run relatively cheap deals! help!

With apologies for the thread hijack, but on a similar note, my phone is due to be replaced soon too - which Pocket PC phones come highly recommended?  I currently use the Orange SPV C500 and like the perfect synchronisation with my Outlook database.

I would go for vodafone - IMO the better service/receptiopn/customer care you get from them makes the extra coouple of quid a month worthwhile.

But I wouldn't get any of the phones there tho! :P

better service at twice the price of course, but that was why I had the options there. What phone would you get then? :)

Well I currently use the Sony-Ericcson V800 which has done me wonderfully, although slightly bulky.

However, the Sharp phones are often overlooked. The GX20 and GX30 are cracking phones. The 20 had one slight annoying feature in that you couldnt add words to the predictive texst memory, but the sharp phones still have the best cameras in the industry, and the 30 I think has resolved the text issue, and offers bluetooth and infra-red connectivity rather than just the infra-red of the 20.

So overall - I think the GX30 would be my choice, the v800 is good, and I got it free :) but if I was to pay for them the GX30 would be my choice.

EDIT: Oh make sure u get the GX30i - the original GX30 had slight connectivity issues.

hmmm, still think I'd go for the v3 over those two. Better deals to be had it would seem!

Yeah the v3's a nice phone it all looks great until you get to the display! I just really don't like the display. If they'd put a better display in it would most likely win hands down for me, but as it is, I'm a bit picky so it doesn't!  :D

Oh and the functions: To quote the review: For those who need functions in the phone I recommend to wait for update version of triplets
Who needs a 3D phonebook? I'd rather have the extra storage space for photos, music etc!

GFK has the V3 and loves it (according to his post).

I gues it depends on what you're after. If it's looks then it's gotta be the V3..... for functionality then anything but a motorola  :lmfao: (says he with a V600)

I know I know, my a835 <_< is a little bit poor...

if there was a phone without the camera I'd still be happy! mp3 is a nice gimmick but they haven't succeeded in melding phones and mp3 players nicely yet.

Good battery life at least  48-72 hours normal use
Good reception/line quality
Low profile shape (i.e. not too fat) and a decent size
Stable firmware with a well set out calender/reminder system and alarm, decent text system...
Decent styling (i.e. not just "another nokia" which is the killer point for the 6230)

that's all I'm after  on a decent deal with 100+voice and 200+text. Currently I pay £12.50 for 500 sms and 50 voice, so a similar deal would be nice

I had a play with my boss' Sony-Ericsson 910i today.

Sweeeeeeeeet. :)  And he got it for £225 off eBay.

Check out the new Nokias too. 6680 (3G) and 6681 (2.5G)

I think the motorola a1000 is similar to the SE 910i ? some say it's better, some not, so a similar sort of thing...

I have had no issues with my V3 at all. It does everything that I want it to and still has features left over. The display is large and clear and easy to read. It has good battery life and I too am with Vodapone as they do have the best coverage and thjere customer support has always been 2nd to none when I have had cause to use them.

good good. My V3 should be up and running on the vodafone network a day or two before the lan. Goodbye three and good riddance!!! :D

btw, does the V3 have good synch-ing to the computer? I'm hoping I can just empty the contents of my soon-to-be-old motorola a835 onto my pc and directly onto the V3...

edit: A friend of mine who works for motorola R&D has one too and tells me that I should make sure the battery is practically discharged before charging it back up again to avoid "memory" p[roblems. Now, I thought battery mem problems were a thing of the past, and a bit of a myth then anyway, especially with Li cell batteries... any thoughts?

Yup indeed it does. A nice usb connection that also charges your phone while its connected. You get a copy of phonetools lite with the phone. You can also use it to send txts etc while the phone is plugged in. I copied my phone book off my Nokia and onto my V3 via outlook with no issues at all.
