Hey all,

We unfortunately had a death in the family just before I was due to book my room and I have been wating for funeral arrangements before looking to contact ther hotel. We now know the funeral wont be next week. Unfortunately the cromwell is fully booked now due to a wedding on the Friday-Sunday period.

If anyone is looking to cancel let me know as I would like to potentially take your booking.

Cheers,

DZ.

Technology Section / Delidding the i7 8700K
August 24, 2018, 10:40:45 PM
I didnt re-seal mine after delid and just dropped the IHS into the socket and used the heatsink so the IHS would definately maker contact with the Die. This does mean you will need to be sparing with the liquid metal as it may slide a little when you secure down. I decided not to use nailvarnish to coat around the die but i have friends where this has saved thew CPU from shorting and would recomend to those who are looking to delid.

Temps are 65-70 degrees with 8700k at 5GHz with a tiny air cooler in a 14 litre case. Delid took 20+ degrees of my of temps under syntheic workload but better than this I have a slient PC now when gaming (well you can still hear the mechanical HDD) but no noise form CPU and GPU playing overwatch etc.

The liquid metal will degrade over time. I check mine each 3 months and reapply if needed but it will dry out eventually and will slowly stain the IHS. Risky but worth it!

I have offered to do the same at the LAN for a few. WIll see if ia remember to bring the di-mate and liquid metal.

Technology Section / Buying a curved monitor
December 02, 2016, 10:48:10 AM
I think I had one of these before anyone else? I was the first one to bring to a LAN for sure. I have had it for almost 2 years now and its a love hate relationship.

For gaming I get frustrated sometimes as very few games support it natively which I want to play. For example fallout 4 doesn't support it natively and if you hack it you end up with glitches. Overwatch and SC2 do not support it nativelya nd there are no workarounds for these games as blizzard see it as hacking to get more screenspace. For these games having the extra real-estate is a waste and I find myself not buying games that I want to play because they don't support the monitor.
The curve I actually am beginning to find annoying as I am using it alot for photo editing and it does warp the edges of the screen as the pixels are larger at the edges because of the curve. This is annoying when you are trying to show people photos on the screen from afar who are not sitting exactly in front of it. It also causes issues with colour cast because of viewing angles for the curve. You cant sit off axis far away from it and use it as a TV really.

The big up size is actually productivity, for work its amazing! I have multiple VM's open and webpages all on the same screen. The PPI is spot on with 34 inches at 3440x1440!! This is the main use case for it.

Would I go 4k... Personally no as there are scaling issues in windows still and the PPI is too high unless you go for a crazy large screen. I do like the ultrawide flexibility for productivity and I am not much of a gamer these days so the benefits outweigh the  cons. Also my 780 TI is getting a bit long in the tooth and I am not planning to upgrade it for a while so 3440x1440 is pushing the hardware I have with most games on Medium-High. On 4k this would be Medium-low with the 33% extra pixels.

If your a true "gamer" stick with 1440 monitors with 144hz refresh would be my advice but if your a jack of all trades or into simulation games go for ultrawide. If your into media production go for a 5k monitor so you can view videos at 4k and still have a UI.

Cheers,

DZ.

Technology Section / modem to switch and router
July 11, 2016, 08:37:06 PM
Anything with external antennas like the medium specced ASUS or Netgears.

If your router is in the middle of the house then yes get a new router but if its in a corner then you could try changing the orientation and or putting some reflective material behind it to try and make it more directional rather than omni-directional.

BT Homehub 4 got binned for me as it kept dropping WIFI signal all the time and caused alot of DHCP issues. It needed to be restarted once every few days and would drop on a critical call. Replaced with all singing all dancing netgear D7800 which is expensive but has the TV passthrough functiuonality and better range.
