Thanks for the kind messages everyone. Lovely to hear from you all and hear some great stories.

Below is the funeral notice and details for donations.

Funeral notice

Of course you would be more than welcome to the funeral but obviously quite a trek for most of you!

Cheers

Seriously though ... / RIP Blunt

Hi everyone,

Being the bearer of bad news hasn't come very naturally to me, so I'll do my best.

Yesterday afternoon, Blunt, aka. Pete, aka. Morg, real name: Peter Morgan, my old man, passed away peacefully at his home in Somerset.

Blunt was diagnosed with Oropharyngeal (mouth) cancer mid-2018, about 2 months before my wedding. He fought the disease and was given the all clear once, but it came back and he was given a terminal diagnosis. The doctors started him on immunotherapy which worked a miracle and he was cancer free, and at the time of his death he was still 'all-clear' on the scans. However, the cancer treatment took and enormous toll on dad, he required a feeding tube directly into his stomach for most of his treatment, and once tretment had finished he could barely open his mouth to eat solids, and he survived the last few years on meal replacement shakes. The last few weeks he went from a fairly steady state of managing the disease with almost constant treatment, to quickly deteriorating and eventually his body couldn't handle it anymore.

He loved this community. Those of you who knew him will be aware that he was all about Counter Strike. He dabbled in Battlefield and CoD, but nothing beat his love of rescuing hostages or defusing bombs. Probably makes sense considering he was a firefighter - saving others came quite naturally to him.

The LAN was his absolute favourite thing to do, and he would attend twice a year amost religiously up until his diagnosis. I have absolutely no idea how many LANs he must have attended. He brought me to my first when I was 15 (20 years ago), and we had some amazing times and met some great people along the way, who he would then knife in the back - his specialty.

He leaves behind his wife Julie, Laurie (son 1), Jack (me, son 2), daughter Martha, and 5 year old twin grandchildren Eira and Hector.

I already miss him dearly, he was the best dad but I'm so glad he isnt suffering anymore.

Quote from: Chaosphere;426737And I am the bearer of bad news again, Sparko has also now had to pull out due to a (different) last minute clash.

These things happen and can't be avoided sometimes :(

This means we have 1 gaming space spare! Currently I am waiting to hear back from DZ, as he was next on the potential waiting list. I will know by Monday if he can make it or not, so if anyone else wants to come along let me know and we will see what happens.

Let me know once you've heard from DZ. I could potentially be available now...

Been getting into the game and it's quite fun, but it is an enormous waste of time and battery power...

Quote from: albert;415473So whats the secret for tossing the balls on harder targets?
Try throwing a curve ball (spin the ball with your finger then launch at a 45 degree angle). If the Pokemon keep escaping your balls, hit it with a Razz Berry first.

How do I get it alerting with the screen off?
Go settings and check 'battery saver'. When you turn your phone upside down it will go into a 'sleep' mode so you can have it on in your pocket.

How do I stop it consuming battery at a rate of a Tesla?
Same as above. Also, when you're catching a Pokemon turn off the camera with the 'ar' button. You only have to do this once and it will stay off.
You will still run out of battery though and your phone will still get as hot as the sun.

Other than that feel my Slowpoke! (no joke a kids game with a character called this)
Keep your Slowpoke to yourself!

Android & Chrome Devices / Nexus 5X & Nexus 6P

Quote from: OldBloke;413123There have been deals recently on the 5X. You might not need to spend as much as you've quoted.

I might hang on a little until some deal come up. As Albert Said, the new HTC Nexus phones are going to drop around October time so might be some more deals on in the coming months.

Cheapest unit from a trusted seller I can see is £274.98 from Ebuyer at the moment.

£209.95 from Simply Electronics but not sure about the seller. I also don't want to end up with a unit from Hong Kong that doesn't have a UK warranty.

I dropped my Nexus 5 from a height of about 1m and broke the screen - not cracked but need to replace the LCD.

I have been quoted £120 for the repair which the supplier has refunded to me, so I now have £120 to spend on either replacing the screen of my original phone, or I can add £160 of my money and upgrade to the Nexus 5X.

What do people think, is the 5X worth it?

Technology Section / Advice on a gaming laptop
February 01, 2016, 02:53:08 PM
Quote from: TeaLeaf;409343To balance GM's comments about ASUS, I bought a £700 ASUS 17" and it has been going to LANs with me almost 4 years and been gaming at 1080p quite happily.  It's now showing it's age, but the N55SF has performed brilliantly for the money.

I've had the N55SF for the last 4 years and it has been excellent, but showing signs of age now.

Looking to replace with a sub £1k laptop before the May LAN. How do we feel about the ASUS ROG series?
