Is it me or is BF2 one of the buggiest games in recent years........i've only had the damn thing a week and i've lost count of the re-installs i've had to do........today i had to do it because i lost the video in it......sound was fine......just a black picture....this makes it difficult to play
This happened after it had been working just fine and for no reason i can work out...........at this rate it'll be in the bin in a week

ATI card? I've read things about the latest drivers causing visual glitches on older (9x00) cards. My 9800pro is running on pretty old drivers (not sure exactly which, but supposedly bf2-safe ones) and I still get the occasional error - tends to be detail geometry such as grass rendering as solid and black. I seem to remember reading that 5.11 and 5.12 cats are good though.

Of course, if you've not got an ATI card all this info is useless...

Sorry to say I have never had to do a reinstall and it hasn't even crashed to desktop in memory. so it look like it's your system.

ATI Card....yep......and in the last week i think i've tried most of the drivers from the last 12 months.

My system works fine for EVERY other game....no probs.......so why should it be my system for this buggy piece of @#*$

try turning down your  ati settings to high performance and turn down some of the detail in bf2 also is you virtual memory big enough as this cause probs with bf2

I had it working fine ( after messing around A LOT....combination of driver/ Hyperthread off/ RAM speed + others....) ..anywya it was working fine

Then yesterday.....black screen with sound....no systme changes made to cause it

Last night i got it working again after messing with system again.

MY point in this is....i can get get it working...but the amount of time and effort needed is stupid........i am also not alone in having problems with this game ....many on this forum have had/are having problems still

It makes me angry that the writers of this piece of software push it out when it is far from ready and its compatibility wiht systems is less than it should be.

i have problems with mine and im running the latest drivers for an ATI card, but for the old drivers that i was using i still had problems sometimes. i just think its the game and today i couldnt get on at all

before today when i joind a server the games shut down completly and then re opened on its own with me logging in to the server that i chose in the first place...wierd

I sort of agree with some of the above posts, but you need to remember BF2 is a system resource hog big time.It does not tolerate fragmented drives, little programs running in the background etc.I have lost count of the amount of customer rigs I have had to "BF2" for want of a better word. Some of these being high end gameing systems. On the other hand my daughters 1.5gig P4(OC to 1.7) and 9600pro system plays it flawlessy, dont figure does it.I am sure if you stick with it Niel you will get it sorted(You seemed to be ok during tourney). :D

Niel

When it runs it runs beautifully.......most settings at medium or high giving me a nice frame rate and gorgeous graphics....................it just really hacks me off that it (a) took so long to get working...and (B) seems a little "fragile"

I think the most annoying thing was when i had got it running fine then the next day for no reason i can work out all i got was a black screen but the game was running as i could hear the sound.

All other games that i run ( quake 4, X3 etc etc ) all ran straight out of the box with only minor tweaks needed to make em run as best as i could get.

Yes, I have to come back to ballance the comments too.

I have NEVER had any problems with BF2 ~ aside from two occassions where EA themselves had problems with thier servers/databases (which in itself is understandable because of the HUGE amount of people that are online at any one time).

I understand the patches annoy people - but what game does not have patches?

As for system resources and graphics - I have gone from one end of the scale to another.

My original syestem was JUST capable of running BF2, and I use a 512 DSL line ~ my original ATI Radeon was the absolute minimum spec that could JUST run BF2 (7550) and I originally only had 1gig of RAM...But nevertheless I was on most days battling it out.

My game has rarely crashed (only a few times recently because of X-Fire, but I have fixed that), and I have reinstalled a couple of times without any problems at all.

I could name many other games I have had a LOT more problems with ~ but mainly, as I come from a Apple Mac gaming background maybe I just don't expect as much as some other people do! :)

BF2 - like most games - is not perfect. There are still things I would like done to it to make the game experience better. But from a software point of view I am quite happy.

I sympathise with people who HAVE had a bad experience - but I just wanted to stand up to say that that is not the majority experience (as far as I can tell from my journies around other BF2 forums).

That's my 2 cents worth.
