Evening, thought I'd start the ball rolling so to speak.

I'm playing as Farnborough and am half way through my second season having been promoted.
This season is a lot harder, leaking late goals and losing a lot of matches 2-1, am hovering above relegation.

The formation that served me proud was a modified 4-4-2, basically now a 4-DM-3(2 wideAM)-2. Plenty of goals and some great play. Now my weak defence is being pummeled.

I've got some good training in place (the high intensity one with minimal effort, but struggle to make the effort with coaches. So any help there would be good.

On the plus side I can recommend Laidler, Charlie Barnett and Ashley Sestanovich if they come up cheaply, also Jay Gasson has great potential.

I found hiring recently retired players makes for good value coaches. I generally stick to a tweaked man to man 4-4-2 on the counter.
Shame there's no button for telling defenders to defend properly and not run about where they feel like. It would help if my players actually took note of their instructions too. :ranting:
6.0.2 patch out too.
(presently Falkirk, started as York-Notts C-Morecombe-Brighton)
Try Ian Herring and Andy Bishop.

Doris has the game but i like to help, or add to his 'tactics'

Doris

im currently Chesterfield ..  with a 4-4-2 diamond

doing well, i found that i won more when i had done things like training - my own schedule.. and better contracts .. insentive :)

Im about 7th in the league ...  very close at the moment lose a point and i could drop to 16th. abouit halfway through my first season, (EDIT) my defence are taking a pummeling aswell, ive got plenty of them, just no decent ones. transfer window closed aswell, waiting to sign some foreign defender.
Scored plenty of goals infact top goal scorer is the top assister aswell, hes a star

If you have a Top squad in League 1, try Dwight Yorke ..  decent striker costs about 10k ...

Are you lot online??  may have to give it ago.

Hippy likes to watch the little circles run round...

Just switched to the 451, packing the midfield and trying to score on the break. Seems a little more stable, now I need to sort out the individual instructions.

I want to have a home and away tactic that holds me clean sheets.

(Dwight Yorke at Farnborough? I've got a 20k budget, but can only do about £1k a week....)

There's a difference, I'm not bothered too much about clean sheets as long as I outscore the opposition. That said, one 7-0 victory was a joy to watch :P
A grand might get you Liam Craig or Enoch Showumni if you're lucky, was better than a £5M striking pair, but I never play with just the one fairy on top of the tree unless someone's been sent off. Look for Petri Vaha-Pesola if you want a good value centreback.

Ok, only found one of them (Liam Craig) so put in an offer to loan. We shall see.

Gonna hit the dugout.net today to see what turns up.

(Anyone want the training that gives max everything with min intensity - cheating I suppose)

Dwey is your man for FM. Been playing it forever in CM then FM versions.

One tactic he passed to me that did work was the 4-1-3-2 formation. The 1 is DM the 3 can include an out and out striker in the middle. No width, but the three mid players are all allowed to push on.

If you need more fire power switch to 4-3-1-2 during the game.

Lots of goals and seems to work well in the lower divisions. Soon buggers up against better opposition when I go 4-4-2 again with wingers and speed.

There is, team wise, drop their creative freedom right down, also to close gap between defence and midfield make sure defensive line is the same as or near attacking.

Obviously individual instructions can also help ie stop forward runs, I forget the option that makes players move to opposition to tackle but you can drop that right down so they stay in position also make sure zonal marking is on.

Lots of posts on the SI forums, which say that the 2nd season is a lot more difficult so don't be surprised if your first season is relatively easy and it gets more difficult thereafter.

Your tactics, training, coaches and half time team talks of a HUGE impact on your players as does morale, FM06 is quite far removed from the ease of FM05 and previous CM.

I simply let my assistant manage half time team talks - if you don't get them right they can seriously mess up your half time lead - I also found it a bit dull choosing the similar options.

I play a custom 4-4-2 with a defensive midfielder.

Having been a beta tester for both FM2005 and FM2006 and all the patches I can confirm this.  Central defenders really need everything 'turning off' so as to speak.  No forward run, no run with ball, have them set to Ultra Defensive, also check to see what they are set to do via the Team option.  If you change the Team options during a match, you just have to remember it will effect every member of the team that Has that setting for that particular option you changed.  You really have to take a very carefull look at how you set up each player, it takes a lot of time, probabkly a full season before you manage to work out the best for each individual, but hey, that's what it's all about, isn't it?   :P

Benny

Cheers fellas,

I'm still running with a 4-5-1, but the outside 2 of the 5 I nudge forward should I need the attack beefing up. The center drops back to cover the defence in a DM position.

Is working well, not conceeding and winning 1 or 2 nil.

Have turned down the center def's but left my LB and RB with a bit of creative freedom, one of them has a flair of 20 so I figured he could pull a few strings.

Is there a nice way to get my strikers to hit a barn door? I've got a LB on load who doubles as a striker, and he can notch them, but I wanna keep him at LB as I think my forwards have potential, just there finishing lets them down.
