Sign me up for that!

Hopefully I'll get GTL soon sos I can try out my xmas present (DFP) with it. It really kicks tango in GT4, so I'm looking forward to it.

Sad thing is I won't be able to get online anytime soon, because my DFP rig (a chopped up sofa table and a Honda CR-V leather seat ;)) is at my parents house (and they don't have ADSL or anything like that). My place is too small and I don't dare even thinking about suggesting to the missus that it really should be here and not there :P

*Sigh*

But I'll still beat you all at the LAN :D

erm I was talking about real life, not pc games, I was a passenger in an Lambo Muircelago (we clocked 186mph, his clutch was on the way out) going flat out against a CTR Yellowbird, which recorded a 196 mph vMax :D

I was invited to vMax7 (the fastest car club in the world) which is held at Bruntingthorpe airfield. 5th Gear with Tiff Needell was there and filmed the day (nice as my car got on the TV quite a bit).

The idea of the day is to see how fast your car can go. You start off side by side lined up against another car.

The cars on display would make any car enthusiast go weak at the knees.

RUF Porsche CTR Yellowbird
RUF Porsche GT2
Lots of modified Porsches including one 993 Careera 4 that had just had a £55,000 Nardo engine producing 600bhp fitted and driven back from Germany - I got a passenger ride in that, fooking awsome is the only way to describe the acceleration!
A 1977 Porsche used for racing and pumping out over 500 bhp
Lambo Muircelago
Lambo Diablo
Ferrari 360, 430, 355 most modified
Maserati 4200
Subaru P1
Ultimata GTR CAN Am 600bhp!
Toyota Supra - modded
Merc SL600 AMG 621 bhp, nearly 700 lb torque
BMW M3 CSL
TVR Tuscan, Tamora and 350
Vx220
and lots of others  and of course my mx5 which was one of the oldest, smallest engined, smallest bhp etc  :D  Still its been modified sensibly and its hp is double that of a normal 5, so its producing 230 bhp, 205 at the wheels and it doesn't weight very much, so I beat a Vx220, an SLK 230, Boxster and an Alfa but that was about it! I vMaxed at only 136 mph which was dissapointing but my gearing wont allow me to any faster.

I got a ride in lots of nice cars inc Honda NSX, modded porsche, drove a Vx220 and it was awsome day - nice to meet Tiff Needell who impressed us all with his driving. Highlight of the day and of the 5th gear show was Tiff interviewing 19 yr old Adam T at 196mph while driving his dads Ruf Yellowbird!

The highlight was both my wife and I getting a passenger ride in Simon George's (who writes for EVO magazine and car appears there every month) Lambo Muircelago - I got upto 186mph but his brakes where going and his clutch is nearly worn out so he was taking it easy  :dribble:

Of course none of this means I'm going to be any good at driving in GTL, I'm sure Ron will serve my ass on a plate  :D

Heres some photos:

Phew! That has to be the 'take the piss out of that lot!' post of the year. :D Top, top stuff. Two things: Did George spend the night in the garage? And I rarely, if EVER, serve ANYONE'S ass on a plate. :( I just love to drive sims and try to make them as real as I can.

Must have been a helluva day.

Sorry it wasn't meant as a brag post, but I thought as a fellow petrol head you would appreciate the photos  :) Nah, George was in a hotel where we met him for lunch, lovely guy, very laid back and not all concieted or big headed but didn't fancy leaving his car in the hotel car park. The running costs on his Lambo are pretty eye watering though, how does around 12k for a new clutch sound? 4k for his tubi exhaust?

I'm sure you'd beat me Doorman, I've seen your setup you must play it a lot!  :D

Is it still the Elan - or is it the 914 now? Std. transmission setup, or any changes there?

mmm, I'd say we should all use the default setup or something, else we'd need a lap or three to get used to the new setup (remembering the huge differences setup can make in LFS) - do we get to adjust the steering sensitivity etc or will we all just use whatever setup is available? Can't practice using a clutch myself...but GTL should be arriving in the next few days (it was fun at the last [dg] lan I went to :))

I've been thinking about this and maybe it would be better if you used any car from the TC-65 group. The Elan is too much of a handful! The Lotus Cortina or the Alfa GTA wouls be sensible choices. Of course, standard setups for everyone.
The leveler would be the fact that you'd all be using my kit. Clutch, gearshift etc.
How's that? Fair?

Better mention that I am not in the competition.

Hmm, I agree that the Elan is a tricky car to drive. I know that I would have to practise driving it on the nurb every day for the next months up untill the LAN, so I wouldn't mind switching to another car. I wouldn't mind staying with the Elan either - it would just be much more of a challenge.

However, I'm not sure about the idea of letting different cars compete in this kind of competition i.e. timed laps. Of course the cars are in the same class and are meant to compete against each other, but it wouldn't give us a picture of 'who's the best driver on the nurb', which I suppose is the idea of this competition?

Regarding the setup of the car: How about if you, Ron, make a LAN-profile that we could all download and use? It would eliminate any questions and doubts about anything.

Another thing, Ron: Could you post pictures of your setup? I'm curious to see your pedal setup and especially how you've fitted a Sparco wheel on the DFP. I have an 'old' wooden MOMO wheel (and actually also a shift knob) I'd like to use, but I don't know where to start...

Oh, and those pictures made me drool Dewey  :dribble:  :D

Avis (car rental service) in Germany have what they call FunCars. That means for instance a Porsche 911 Carrera S or convertible and various Mercedes stuff. AND IT ONLY COSTS â,¬199 (abt. £ 140) for a 24 hour rental including 200 km!!!!

I'm definitely going to Germany this summer.
