I'm with aTwig on this. I can do over 40,000 miles for my job a year and I have wasted far to many hours on that damn M25:ranting2: . It has taken me over 9 hours to get to bath and back today:ranting2:. So the fewer people on the road the better and don't get me started on the school run:ranting2:

It looks like most people agree we can't build more roads. so what do all the pooh pooh'ers suggest:norty:

Take France(please), they have great roads and an excellent railway service.

Privately run road system (payage)

Which raises the question,

"How will foreign drivers be charged on UK roads?"

When we go abroad we go through the tolls and pay, no problem, but I'm pretty sure your Euro day-tripper won't be expected to fork out for a UK tracking device.

I signed when it hit my inbox before Christmas.

I have to admit I'm sort of with the pro charging group. Just leaving things alone is going to end in disaster. No one seems willing to leave their car at home through choice so someone is going to make that choice for them. We all go on enough about doing something about the sate of the roads and dealing with climate change. Well here we are. As mentioned before. If anyone has a better idea about how to sort the mess out then I'm all ears

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

One point i would like to say here is i do not believe in speeding. I have since passing my test stuck to the limits to make sure i kept my license. I am the person who makes traffic jams in urban area driving at 30mph and 70mph on motorways. Therefore in that respect i am for it as i am sick and tired of people who speed! However the tax would be helpful for those like me who hardly use the car as i am a student but one point i would like to mention is that i drive a small daewoo matiz. Yes it is efficient and cheap to go long distances but my road tax is in excess on £130 per year which is ridiculous for such a small motor car. I am not sure where i stand on this issue.

All the countries are starting to have tolls and such Lib.
Yesterday on the radio they said the Belgiums were planning on starting tolls and such also. If they do then I think they should do the exact same thing in the Netherlands.

@ Scott, dude, drive a tad faster m8. I allways drive 10km/h extra. Some people get on my nerves as they drive around 45 km/h where 50 is allowed. Live a little.
Speeding is quit allright if you know what you're doing. When I went to Italy on holiday I've tryed my car and it still could drive a nice 180 km/h.:woot2:

Its not the size of your car, it's the emissions. I have and Audi TDI and pay £110

Speeding is for those who think they are above the law. The limit is there for a reason and it's a limit not a target!!

Benny

Back on subject, if they could ensure that the fees went back into transport I'd be happy to pay it.

I drive every day, I could ride to the station - 4 miles and get the train straight to my office, and frankly it would be better for me, and I'd get to work on the train....(I think that's a good thing - means I don't have to work at home).

The whole transport system needs a kick in the teeth and it's about time somebody assisted people in making those decisions, as a previous poster said.

I see it more as marker receding into the distance in my mirrors.

When the NSL is subverted by local authorities to 50, 40 and 30 limits for no other reason than revenue generation, then they can go whistle.

For people interested in a serious read about traffic safety you could try this site Safe Speed

There's a lot of stuff on the site and it's a little to heavy on maths and graphs for my liking but still makes for an interesting read. Their basic tenet is that stupid drivers who don't pay attention to what they are doing cause accidents, not simply people who exceed the posted speed limit. I'm personally OK with most of their argument. However I have a problem with anyone who exceeds the 30mph urban limit by any significant degree. Urban areas means children running about, and no matter how stupid they might be when it comes to road safety if I choose to put a car/motorbike/van etc. on the road I have a moral obligation to look out for them and drive slow enough that when they do run out in front of me I will either avoid them completely or hit them at a slow speed and not wipe them out. And I guess that goes for adults as well...maybe :g:
