Now running service pack 3. I can't notice anything different. If you prefer ie6 and windows media player 10 like i do you will be pleased to note the sp3 pack does not force an install of ie7 or wm11.

So if you have kept up to date with ms updates you don't really need to install SP3 unless you are on a network with server 2008 servers.

Not only AMD users :sad: One tip I picked is that if you're using IE7 uninstall it. THEN install SP3. After cutting my teeth on my machine, updating Arja's PC was very straightforward. An interesting few days. :blink:

                                       Microsoft has blamed its OEM partners for problems relating to its recent SP3 release, suggesting that they ignored its advice to be careful not to install the wrong XP image onto AMD machines.

The problem, which firm emerged with the launch of SP2, is apparently caused when an OEM loads the wrong Sysprepped XP image onto machines with non-Intel-based chipsets, such as AMD-based machines.

"Microsoft is aware of a reboot issue experienced by some users who have attempted to install Windows XP SP3," said a Microsoft spokesman told the Channel Register's Kelly Fiveash. "While the root cause of this issue is complex, it results from OEMs improperly placing a Windows XP image created for an Intel-based computer onto machines with non-Intel chipsets.

"Microsoft issued guidance to OEMs advising them to only load Windows XP images onto like hardware in 2004."

AMD confirmed the cause of the problem to the site, echoing Microsoft.

Indeed, I saw that article too. However someone has noticed that the auto-install version of SP3 is about 200-250MB smaller than the manual download. This suggests that possibly the manual download installs *all* the drivers, not just the ones that match your sysprepped image, and might prevent this issue popping up.

Theres also an issue that if you install windows with sp3 already inside i.e. from a cd with an sp3 version then this will mean than it will save around 2-3gb hard drive space compared to a patch install from what i've been reading

I tried it on a machine at work, nothing major happened and it still runs.

I've installed it on a couple of PC's.  There are some issues around DHCP/DNS that have caused problems with it at work but on home PC's It has been fine.
