Is it steam related, other steam games were having issues tonight?

We had the same problem last night on Boomer for about an hour.  At the time I checked the game server and the CPU,Memory and network utilisation on the NIC's looked fine.  The people on the CoD server also had lag issues.

It got so bad tonight that the CS servers are now empty

Yes it was really awful.
  • Voicecomms were completely choppy
  • I couldn't switch weapons
  • Bullets didnt register e.g. standing point blank behind someone and shooting
  • Getting shot behind walls (on my screen at least)
  • People teleporting due to spikes
I just gave up. It was impossible to play.

weird that last night the pings were huge but tonight they appeared normal:blink:

not everybody was sounding choppy to me, but I sounded choppy to some but not others:g:

My ping was 33% higher than usual. I usually get 28-32 to our servers. Tonight it was 40-50. However, that shouldn't give that type of problems at all.

Someone said my voice sounded weird but I think they were just being rude! Seriously, my VCs were poor so I restarted the game (CoD) then I was rudely told that our server doesn't accept low pings! I rebooted my modem and rejoined, everything was fine again. :) Except everyone else had p*ssed off!

I joined cod4 after mh and found that a bit laggy, comms choppy too...of course that may be my pc:sideways:

Firstly, it wasn't me - I never touched a thing....

I got the same error and just couldn't connect back on to our server :(

I write down everything I want to remember. That way, instead of spending a lot of time trying to remember what it is I wrote down, I spend the time looking for the paper I wrote it down on.

We seem to get a lot of these problems.  As Gandalf has already mentioned in previous threads there should not be anything to cause the problem except for the backups.

Apparently the Internet connection into the dMw Server Lan is huge so it shouldn't be that.

If more than one server is having problem (CSS, COD, FORUMS) then you would expect the problem to be due to either:

  • The Internet Connection into the Server Lan.  Maybe a problem with it rather than it's bandwidth.
  • A problem with the router(s) in the Server Lan

Low on the list of suspected causes would be:

  • Each individual server if they are on different boxes.
  • All our Internet connections

How is the LAN made up? i.e. How many servers and what are they running?  How many (and what type are the) routers in what (general) configuration? DHCP? Mutliple NICS?

By the way, do the routers restrict how many connections are incoming into the LAN or do they restrict bandwidth in any way?

as i said bg2 and zombies servers (only 2 i tried)were having same problems so could it all be related maybe they r on same server site?

I've got a response back from our hosting provider;

QuoteHi Neil

There was a denial of service attack made upon one of our upstream
providers network on Thursday night.

I was able to shut the feed down and make use of one of our other
providers.

I believe that some of the out of hours latency issues are down to
residual over flow from the DOS attack.

Please keep me apprised of any more problems.

Regards

Mark

So it should hopefully be resolved now. Do keep me informed though.

Thanks for the update Gandy and the continued help with these performance issues. Much appreciated.

My missus is carrying out a DOS attack. Can you help with that too?
