through careful management I\'ve got most of it left.

The phrase is 'up to' 8 meg ;) The actual speed you get depends on your distance from the exchange and how good quality the phone cables to you are. I'm about 2.5-3 miles from our local exchange, on pretty bad old cabling, and am lucky to get 4mbps. Normally it syncs at about 3.5-3.7. Same goes with ADSL 2+. 'Up to' 25 meg, but we tested some of the ADSL 2+ kit out there and it wouldn't even link at 25 meg over a 2m length of cat5e (That was some cheap naff modems though). I'd expect that in real world conditions if you're more than 0.5 miles from the exchange you'd not get the full whack.

Well, I am 2004 meters for my server and have a 2MBit - but get 0.8-1.4 during evenings and other peak hours... :ranting2:

I have 2 miles of cable between me and the exchange and I get the full 8 meg. The main reason for this however is that in my town, all the phone cables are underground and of very high quality.

Distance isn't everything as you say, the cable quality also plays a part.

Just to clarify, I was talking about 25 meg on ADSL 2+, not 8 meg on ADSL 1, when I said 0.5 miles from the exchange :) I know ADSL 1 doesn't drop off as fast. I think i've got some aluminium somewhere along my route :(

Methinks your phone line is made of wet string :narnar:

Ahh right, yeah. If I was on adsl2 then I'd expect between 16-18 meg with the quality of my line.

However, if you have aluminium in your line somewhere then that is a problem. Not so much the cable, but the joints that turn to white powder!

speedtest.net doesn't seem to 'see' that I'm now on a new connection? (upload yes, but not download). In fact speedtest.net is slower now (50Mb) than it was a few weeks ago! (20Mb)

speed.io however does :)
