Turns out only the pre-requisites are on the DISK. Most of the actual content has to be downloaded via steam to avoid piracy.

Things like this makes we want to go back to console gaming...... Just pop it in the drive and off you go.

So you buy the game on a DVD, and it then has to download a whopping great big chunk of content from Steam.

But it's not actually a Steam game.

What?

Yepp its retarded and on the 2 meg connection you would be downloading it for about a day or so.

Hardly just pop in the drive and go!

THQ like ****ing me off, first we got screwed over compared to the Americans in terms of free stuff. Then you are required to purchase a DVD that enables you to download the content to use the game. You cant just DL the game on STEAM like in the US.

Really stupid marketing model that no-one has thought about. Perhaps they got a load of stuff printed sitting in a warehouse and needed to shift it as it was costing too much to store?

*Rant, Rant, Rant*

The game better be worth it...

Whats it like so far chaps?

On-line play is good. Myself and Pete were playing into the early hours.

Drones are awesome. The game in my opinion is unbalanced in terms of classes at the moment with snipers with the higher level rifles one hitting you if you don have the flack-jacket. Really good fun thought with big team battles.

Will write more a review when I get more of a chance to play it. Hopefully tomorrow.

Am I right in thinking you HAVE to buy this retail in a box and then download additional content through Steam? You can't just buy it on Steam like a normal game?

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

Thats correct as odd as it sounds.

My thoughts on the game so far..

Have to say that I am disappointed with the graphics, it's not awful, but seems to take a step backwards with whats currently out. It's also not optimized very well as people are struggling getting decent FPS, even with Vsync on, you don't seem to get much over 60fps.

MP is pretty good and finding it addictive. It is a bit hard going to start off, as I got shot most of the time and struggled to kill anyone, but keep keep at it as you start to get use to maps and spots etc.

I had a quick go at MP tonight and found it difficult to stay alive long enough to kill someone.
It'd be good to get a load of dMw's onto a server to slow things down a bit and get some comms going...
Agree with Snokio re the graphics, but it runs lovely on my rig:D
We could do with a tips thread if anyone has the inclination:)

This is good enough reason for me to avoid it.

Bought it on g2play, got the code, enterd in Steam and got my first game Friday.
So far it seems the single player is very short (5hours from what I've heard).

Played on a server with DZ on Friday which was good and spent the rest of the weekend on TOGA's server. Ranked up untill rank 34 with only playing Fridaynight and Sunday for a bit.
About the MP; You have to know the maps and such and which setups are good. About the sniperrifles, the 2nd one is awesome, used mine alot yesterday, you only see a white figure to shoot at (so thermalscope).
The respawning goes fast but can be annoying sometimes due to spawncampers.
I'm liking the game so far to be honoust but it all depends on who you play with in the end for em.

EDIT; Forgot something, if people get a high killstreak they end up with a skull on their head which if you kill him you'll receive a bonus. The longer the killstreaks, also the better perks for this player. Manage to get to 4 skulls allready...

I seem to be able to stay alive for 5 mins at a time but I am a naturally cautious player who doesn't get many kills and therefore doesn't rank up quickly.

My tips are :

1.When you spawn get to cover and spend the first 10 - 20 seconds looking at your map screen looking for the telltale red dots (if you have spawned as infantry and not in your own vehicle or in someone else's). Depending on the gametype the battle-lines in homefront can change quickly so don't just run forward aimlessly to get to cover. Try and get your bearings and depending on your class move out to your destination.
2. Loadout is very important in homefront, I always have my machine-gun drone with me who is your best friend as he can take a lot of fire! I also use the cruise missiles for when I have a bit more cash and need to take down some snipers. Its best to save up for something nice though like a tank or apatche as they currently are overpowered in the game with no class having antitank at load-out. There are many times where as soon as I have spawned at the beginning of a round I have just got my drone out and taken out 5-6 players who didn't use their starting money to buy stuff and have just run towards and objective. This keeps my body safe and I get more money (albeit less for drone kills compared to kills with a primary or secondary weapon.)
3. The classes on homefront are unbalanced so picking the right class is crucial. Snipers are the most powerful class currently as when you unlock the second sniper rifle it's a one hit kill. Due to the physics there is no bullet drop so it's a point and shoot affair. Higher level players with sniper rifles are pretty much unstoppable from range if they are a good shot. You will find most of the time on maps snipers are shooting snipers with the odd Heavy or Assault kill thrown in. If a sniper gets behind lines where you are spawning you are screwed and expect to die several times before you can get more than 10 metres from where you have spawned. To avoid this buy a vehicles (if you have the cash) then the snipers account take you out with their rife and have to rely on drones. The second best class in homefront is Assault. The best weapon I have font so far and really like is the ACR which has a really nice fire mode where if you tap you get one very accurate single shot and if you hold down for a fraction longer it goes to full auto. Once you have a decent sight on it you will give the snipers a run for their money in terms of range and accuracy. I recommend the ACOG scope for it but use the holo sight which you unlock after 5 kills till you unlock this as the scopes are a big help. The silencer is pretty nice for use with the ACR too as the gun sights is very usable compared to other guns. Heavy class and SMG seems to be pretty useless with most of the maps. The machine-guns are just too inaccurate compared to the Assault rifles so you find yourself being taken out after 5-10 shots on an enemy which have all missed. SMG doesn't have the range of the assault class and the guns are not as good. On the maps I have played this class is useless.
4. Pistols are you friends, particularly as a sniper when moving to position. They are very powerful and can often taken down someone in the assault class before they can get a shot off. Stupidly accurate too when fired without looking down the sights! As Assault class you will run out of ammo pretty fast (4-5 kills and you will be looking for more or to pick up someone else's gear) so pistols are useful and sometimes better than your primary when starting off.
5. Use your map all of the time.... I must spend 20% of my time looking for red dots and adjusting my position to face the threats or to move to a new position where I have more cover. Any enemies in the line of sight of a friendly (If they have spotted them or not) will appear on your map. This means in larger servers you can pretty much see everyone who has a chance of killing you on your map most of the time.
6. This games seems to have been made for camping and flanking tactics. I can get 10 kills at a time by silently pushing through lines and getting behind enemies from where you can pick them off at your will. Exploring and taking long detours on the long maps really does pay off. It may takes you 3 mins to get to a position but once there you can normally get a lot of kills. This is particularly useful for when yourself or the enemy have taken 3 objectives and move onto the next. Everyone be default rushes towards the new objectives. I tent to flank them by letting them rush forward and remain in the area of the previous zone trying to pick them off. You can often get some really nice side on points as the respawn points often change a great deal when moving up to the next capture points once people have started dying after moving up.
7. Grenades are overpowered and you can frag the hell out of people by nade spamming capture points and houses where you know people are positioned. They have a very large blast radius and anyone not with a flack jacket within about 15 meters is done for.
Hope this helps.

I have played a few games with mates and had a couple of games with Pete which went well. Once you get used to it its good fun but it can be very frustrating at times.

I guess the main question is: Does it offer anything new to DMW?

It's sounding awfully similar to games we currently play.
