I've been munching on this for a while now and figured that it needs to be posted.

Star Citizen will Fail

As you can generally see from the forums here and at RSI, people are desperate for the DFM to be released.   Ship names have been prepared, Organisations created, fan sites rendered, lore developed, expectations set and now we wait for the release.  But STOP!   We're NOT waiting for the release, the release will be in 2015, we're waiting for access to a pre-Alpha module which is part of the ongoing development of the game.

So the game is guaranteed to fail.

It will NOT run totally smoothly.
It WILL have graphical bugs.
It WILL have control glitches.
It WILL crash.
We will NOT be able to get into the DFM module whenever we want due to the access restrictions.
We WILL be disappointed with some of the cockpit designs or control mechanisms.
We WILL be disappointed with the state of some of the ships designs/rendering.
We WILL regret the lack of TrackIR support.
Etc.....

We WILL be disappointed.

BREAKING NEWS:

We'll survive; we'll live with it.  Why?   Because in the normal development cycle of a game we'd not even get access to a module this early in its development.   This module is pre-Alpha, it's not even Alpha quality yet and it's just one small part of the whole game.

Therefore we should go into the DFM knowing that in some way, this game will fail to live up to our expectations, because our expectations are based on our hope for the 2015-released game.  So let's rein in our expectations and remember that it is just an incredible opportunity to get early experience of the progress the developers are making towards the goal of releasing this game in 2015.

Star Citizen WILL fail to live up to our DFM expectations.    But I will LOVE playing this game anyway.

great post, totally agree, it will be like ARMA 3 (in terms of game evolution), we will love  and hate it all at the same time, and then something will just click and all will be well in the universe

I came into this world with nothing,
through careful management I\'ve got most of it left.

My poor old tickaire gave a lurch there for a minute. :( But you're spot on. In the normal course of events we wouldn't even be seeing what we're seeing, much less playing with it.

A very insightful post.

Well, to be honest I don't like the engine they used.

Feels very clunky and laggy, even at high frame rates.  Hopefully we'll be able to fully customise graphic options, including FoV, and the nauseating menu/GUI continuous movement.

Here's hoping.

Well said TL. I'm preparing myself for the hordes of Reddit chumps, who will be treating the DFM as some sort of demo for the full game.

Nobody's really done anything like this before, certainly not on this kind of scale. It's going to be one heck of a ride :)

I'm not too worried.. I'm only £40 into the game so.. it's like Carmegddon.

I thought I'd bump this to suggest that whilst we're impatiently kicking our heels waiting for the actual release, we're almost actively looking for things that annoy us to give us something to fill in some of the blanks in our knowledge of what the future game will be.   Back in May when this was originally written I didn't really think about the funding aspect sufficiently and therefore didn't include it in what I wrote, although since then the funding aspect that has come up several times in discussions, but it is part of the same issue in my opinion.

The nature of this unique game development cycle will, for the first time ever, give us opportunities to discuss, both positively & negatively, aspects of the game, the developer and the progress of our preferred aspects etc, that we would never normally have if it were a game being brought to market by a publisher.  Let's remember what what we would about a game at this stage of development in a publisher model:

Publisher Model:
We'd know that there was a 'project' underway and we'd have an unconfirmed rumour that it might go to Beta in early 2016.

RSI Model:
We have a massive, still growing and thriving community of enthusiastic backers, with thousands of hours of video, pre-alpha models, direct community contact with developers allowing input into the game development, a huge library of lore, theory-crafting debates and a shared vision with Chris Roberts of what will be the "best god damn space sim everTM".

Every now and then it think it's worth stepping back and remembering what we have and how lucky we are to have this model working for us.  This forum section would be much quieter or not even exist if Star Citizen were a publisher game.

Personally, I get a huge buzz from our involvement in the game, even though it has not released a single finished component.  I look forward to news, I find myself thinking about the possibilities for certain aspects of the game and I visualise the teamwork we'll be able to undertake together in the persistent universe when the game is eventually released.    There are aspects I don't like, there are things I'd rather they didn't do (like the last ATV video which was shambolic), but in its totality I love it.   Without even being released I already feel I've had way more entertainment & enjoyment out of Star Citizen than a lot of the games I've previously bought.

I feel passionate about the game, as do others, but that's why we care so much and feel the pain when it's something we don't like.  But together let's keep walking that path towards the PU, because if the released game does even 50% of what they hope to deliver, it will be a game that will repay our investment of passion a hundred times over.

I have to say as someone who is less likely to speak out in the RSI forums the actual reading up on lore and learning about the game that will be interests me more than having to stick my oar into every debate. I believe at this point there is a working game after seeing improvements in Arena and the FPS demo. It's already delivered in terms of quality.
