LAN'ers of Dead Men, last LAN it is fair to say we had a fair few problems that really impacted our weekend.

In the dark and damp backrooms of LAN admins HQ we and the Council have been working to make sure this doesn't happen again.  So some changes have been made and they are as follows

  • We now have a dedicated fiber line 80/19 direct to the room which went live on the 7th of July 2015.  This is not shared with any other part of the hotel this is for us only.
  • We will have full access and in charge of the Router for this connection which has been updated to the latest firmware
  • The LAN server is being upgraded in terms of hardware and software.

We hope that this might answer some of you questions in regards to this.

I came into this world with nothing,
through careful management I\'ve got most of it left.

That's great news Toby, do you think the switches are in good enough shape to handle another LAN?

Worst case, a few of us can nick some old gear at work. There's bound to be some gigabit switches destined for replacement.

One step at a time and chances are the Admins might break before the switches do.

Great news and well done guys. :yahoo:

No idea if there are any danes attending this lan, if there were they could stop by my place and pickup some new cisco switches, which i wouldn't mind donating for the lan to keep.

Note switches have now been donated to the local youth clubs lan parties.

Yes.

The problems we experienced at the lan were not really down to the switches, more to the hotel's 'new' network setup.

Our switches are all gigabit so have more than enough bandwidth to handle the small throughput that the lan generates.    Whilst we have found a few dead ports, as each switch has 24 ports we should not be lacking in connectivity options.   The lan switches are in the budget plan to be replaced next year unless we can find a valid reason to spend the money sooner.

i'm gonna bring those hp switches with me to the lan toby, so you can always have them as a backup.

Make sure they are config'd to run as 'dumb' switches please or all hell will probably break loose on the network if they are used!

Well, if a switch is malconfigured it is only likely to affect itself and downstream clients. Still, would be good if all ports are VLAN 1 :)
Not too familiar with HP's setup, but they probably have things like DHCP Snooping? That's really useful at a lan. If someone or something starts handing out DHCP responses where none is expected, you can filter it or shut the port completely. That way, only the authorized DHCP server gets to respond to requests. Cheap insurance against idiots :)

Just telnet or ssh to the thing and reset it to factory defaults. Might need a hardware factory reset if nobody knows the password. Then it's be in in a single vlan mode no L3 or any smart stuff we don't need. Bring a PDF of the manual along.

Can you give us the exact model number right off the back of the switch, full string of characters and serial number as well Sneaky?
