Quote from: smilodon;415766I do think I now have a good handle on what this game is and isn't about. I was hoping for a sort of low stress gentle wander through space, finding new interesting planets, collecting unique items/specimens, learning the languages, casual trading and occasionally fighting off pirates or aggressive monsters. Collecting items in a big enough hold and selling them to generate money for fuel, upkeep, repairs etc would be fine as well, as long ass it didn't dominate the game. A bit of tactical planning with weapon loadouts, shield balancing etc would have also been nice. Multiplayer would be nice but Hello Games always said this wasn't a traditional multiplayer type game, although I think it would benefit greatly from being so.

Sadly this game currently seems to be utterly dependent on grinding endless resources. Even the resource gathering tool needs resources to enable it to gather resources! I want to go look at stuff, identify it, catalogue it and maybe sell it. I don't want to be forced to endlessly point a laser gizmo at it.

I have had 10 hours in this game now, and it is just what you where saying you where hoping for. It is NOT "grinding endless resources". Resources that you constantly need is usually easy to find. The grinding is just people trying to "bend" game mechanics to get "more money"/better equipment.

Yesterday I spent repairing and moving in to a ship that I found crashed and abandoned.  You know the crash sites you see in Elite? Here you can take over the ship and fix it.

I have had one program crash and that was yesterday too. If you have a intel/nvidia rig I think you are fine.

The feeling when you just have to walk out in the night to find something, and you know there is dangerous animals waiting for you is priceless.
Maybe it is best to sit here in the cave or ship until day break?

Edit:
I forgot; On some planets you need more resoures to stay alive due to toxics, heat/cold, under water etc.

I think the grind part as Vobler says is purely up to the individual. The video I posted yesterday showed the guy emptying an Iridium supply including going underground, just to get the resources to sell and do a bit of crafting. You don't need to take lots of everything you find, just enough to keep you going whereby minimizing the grind.

I think though it is a bit rinse and repeat encountering other characters as you are forever landing, entering the main building, talking to the Director or some other person and giving them some resources for upgrades or information.

I'm not trying to earn lots of money, I am more interested in learning the languages and exploring ruins. I do feel I'm forever recharging my suit and keeping an eye on Plutonium supplies so I can fuel my ship.

I haven't been on a planet with many animals yet, my spawn are is pretty low in vegetation and water.

No, it's still rubbish.

Speaking from experience Chaos? I actually quite like it. It's fun as a single player game. They're still adding features.

Yes mate. I tried it again recently.. isn't for me. Repetition of the worst kind with no real meat.

Point is I couldn't advise anyone to check it out for £16.

£1.60 sure, have a go.. but not anywhere above £5.

I think it's as much fun as any other survival game becauae they added vehicles and crafting. The space exploration and combat parts have always been slicker than any other game excluding elite. Maybe my expectations are lower.

I need a new single-player experience whist waiting for the next Wolfenstein installment so I'm in. Thanks for your thoughts, guys.

Hmm, I seem to have this in the library.   What level are folks playing and is there a multiplayer side to access?   Not played it at all yet.

As far as I know mate there is no  multiplayer it is a single explore in the distance universe, which they are adding modules too.

Rumors of "joint exploration" whatever that is....

BrotherTobious

Well if it has good multiplayer then I am really interested.

Edit:

JOINT EXPLORATION

Glitches in the simulation have begun to appear.
Visualised by strange floating orbs, up to 16 players can see and communicate with one another, and explore the universe together.
While interaction with others is currently very limited, this is an important first step into the world of synchronous co-op in No Man’s Sky.
While interaction is very limited, VOIP (Voice over IP) allows proximity based voice chat with other nearby explorers.
Use portals to quickly travel to more populated planets, or to meet up with friends.

This makes me wary.

I want to enjoy this game I really do, but oh they seem to make that difficult. If braver explorers than me have a good experience with it then I'd be happy to be wrong with my impressions of what this update proposes... but doesn't sound like a decent multiplayer yet to me :/
