Some reviews criticise the complete randomness of where you first appear. Some people get to scavenge stuff and fix their ship in warm meadows and rolling hills and others are forced to fight for life in freezing toxic wastelands. Apparently that is a negative feature of the game. It would be better for us all to be allocated a safe starter planet.

I thoroughly disagree.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

RizZy

I had kinda assumed it dropped you in it on a hostile planet to start with as the quickest way to learn what the games all about in a boss fight straight away style thing. Oh well, only died the once when I lost my ship, so that's something I guess.

sulky_uk

1st planet was +60c with random fire storms, got me ship fixed and followed the radio to the next planet +5 radiation, only died once and that was because the sentinel thing that seems to do feck all attacked me when i was getting carbon!!

One huge plus point over the old build is the way it teaches you the core mechanics and gets you off world and exploring. The quests don't feel as intrusive as many tutorials, but really quite natural. Spawning on a deathtrap wasn't much of an issue as the game quickly taught me how to deal with it. Much like surviving nights on Ark, once you know how to handle sentinels and the elements they remain a challenge but become much more manageable. I've no complaints!

I'll be on discord in an hour or so - we should try and meet up for the next bits!

How much slog (slowly collecting resources via a mining laser etc) is there in this game? :g:

Although resource collection is certainly a core part of progression, it hasn't felt like a grind yet. At least in the first few hours, the resources you need are plentiful on most planets (i.e. easy to find) and you tend to get fairly large amounts from short bursts of mining.

The main thing I can see changing as you go deeper is the availability of the rarer resources - some may only be on certain planets, for example. I'm not sure if the grind will also ramp up later, it remains to be seen!

What has the multiplayer actually brought to the game.

Is it a whole new mission system or just being able to visit each other.

Chaosphere

As far as I can tell, it's up to you.

I'm not sure multiplayer has brought anything new to the game, but rather given you a different way to play it. It's up to you if you want to explore solo, or as part of a group. If the latter, you could literally do pretty much the entire game together, from exploring the first few systems and getting used to it all, to building a large team base on a chosen planet, and using that as a hub to then further progress. You could do the whole 'story' together, if you wanted to. In the same way that we would often team up in games like Ark - you go get X, I'll go do Y - you can work together here, if that's how you want to experience it, there is plenty to find, build, and upgrade. Of course, if you would prefer to keep it as a solo experience (which personally I am finding very relaxing and enjoyable), then the new patch just lets people pop in and say hello. Really up to you.

finally found myself a nice planet, perfect for wandering around on - then it started to rain, super high temperature rain, boil you in your suit type rain, sigh.

If someone has a freighter they offer group based missions too...
