Religion on the other hand provide their own benefits (and i'm sure i read you can eventually learn all religions - or choose to follow another)

I personally going with Mitra to start with as the ambrosia is a godsend (literally) with its health regen - and as previous mentioned her level 2 shrine gives access to a fountain, but they all have their own charms

I tried a NL based server for 2 hours this afternoon. I went with Yog, I never did any shrine stuff as the initial sgine costs 50 craft points. I reached level 12 already not dying once.

The thing I will say that backs up your advice Milli, regeneration of health requires a lot of food to get back from very low to full.

But I managed to survive killing about 10 other AI people.

sounds like they may have altered the levelling rate as well - as for all time i played i think i only got to lvl 25.

But yeah, will need to check up on it - but Mitra with Ambrosia is a saviour in the early game, although i'm sure the ambrosia can be shared even if you do not have mitra as a religion.

edit: The initial shrines to your god cost very little, its the upgrading that costs the time and resources

Well the server config was all set a 1.0 for everything and the initial shrine was 50 craft points.
