That is awesome news.   I'll be jumping on this right away, it does seem that P3D is overtaking FSXSE, certainly for those well-known streamers, I don't know any of them who use FSXSE any more.  Might have to snag a PMDG toy to go with it though :norty:

Yeah, it looks like Tealeaf is right, the battle now is between X-Plane and P3D.
I expect to get this when I start flight simming again.

From something I read on AVSIM, you will get it for free

As we promised back in 2015, customers who have purchased our products for Prepar3D v3 are going to enjoy a free transition to Prepar3D v4 and the advent of 64bit simming technology, as this was already rolled up into the development costs of the product you already purchased.

Beginning on/shortly after the release of Prepar3D v4, we will begin publishing Prepar3D v4 compatible versions of our existing product lines.  We have spent the better part of 2017 thus far working our way through the transition of our existing product line to make the NGX, 777, 747 and DC-6 compatible with the new, Prepar3D v4.

As of today, we have both the DC-6 and the 747 operating within Prepar3D v4, and we hope to have the 777 completed later this week, with the NGX to follow shortly there-after.

Those who are already customers of our Prepar3D products will be able to obtain these new versions at no cost.

Not quite.

That's the critical bit.  If you already own say the PMDG 747 QoS II for FSX but you want to have it for Prepar3d too then you need to buy it again and it will cost you AUS$134.99.   It's only those who already own the P3D version who will get the upgrade for free.

OrbX stuff should transfer no problem as the licence is for both FSX & P3D, but the PMDG stuff has been deliberately kept separate.  There's some interesting (and angry) threads on the net about what PMDG have done, including some accusations that they deliberately changed some of the base FSX code for their PMDG products that would have worked just fine in P3D without additional coding, to enforce code that could not work in P3D too, thus forcing the purchase of an additional version if you wanted to run it in P3D as well.

Ok I see.

One Academic licence purchased and in mid-download.   Post installation will then be the fun of setting up the addons

I think I might need a new SSD which only hosts flight sims, as my FSX folder was about 260GB

All installed fine, but now the learning curve begins.  Currently got a list of settings videos on tabs to go through to understand their impact on both performance and look.

Orbx - just waiting for the updated FTX Central to be issued and then they will install into P3D.
ActiveSky2016 - I bought the upgrade to P3D (cheaper than full price and then discounted further on their sale) and am just awaiting the patch to enable it to work with P3D v4.
Rex - awaiting a patch to enable everything, however it looks like they have a rather nice new product coming out which will replace things: Rex SkyForce 3D (see separate thread).
Airports, I'm just going to sit and wait and go through things one by one.

Excited by things so far, the sim ran far smoother than FSXSE (which I guess it would anyway without any addons), but it looked really nice.

Is the Eula changed now?
I read once that the academic license is just for people in Academic education. (And I guess you finished a "couple" of years ago) :-)

Anyhow; I'm interested and might switch in a couple of months when I start flight siming again.

You don't have to put a school or college down. So im assuming all is ok

Well neither the Professional nor Academic licence allow use for personal/consumer entertainment, so I guess you need to take a view on that yourself!

I've never seen or heard about it being enforced.  Afaiaa, the EULA terms are those imposed on them by Microsoft from whom they bought the licence to develop FSX.  Dovetail had a similar licence and you can see that it hasn't slowed them down either.

I should probably add, that if I like what I find in P3D v4 I am likely to switch to the Professional licence just to get rid of the watermark.  Yeah, I know, $140 to remove a watermark - but it will tick me off royally over time if I don't get rid of it!

LM offer a 60-day refund policy, so you have that time to make your mind up.   I'll probably make my decision within the next couple of weeks.

How big is the watermark btw?

See if you can find it in this screenshot!

Full size picture is here.

If you did not know where on the screen it was, it would take you a good few seconds to find it.
It's actually really small and in white, located in the very top right of the screen, exactly in the place where you would normally see a bright sky or clouds.  So I may rethink my decision and stick with Academic, we'll have to see.
Things I am liking about P3D v4:

1. I have not yet gone OOM!
2. I love the water, it is so much better than FSX even before I have installed any addons.
3. Like FSX:SE, P3D is forked from FSX (albeit each from a different version of FSX), so most of the usual key commands you are used to in FSX also work in P3D.
4. I'm likely to spend my flying time in addon aircraft, not in the default aircraft.

Things I do not like:
1. The selection of starter aircraft which are not exactly overflowing with detail, all low res cockpits and few working buttons and switches.  Plus, they have no airliners by default, so any tubeliners will be payware addons.

Default air frames:
Beech King Air 350
Carenado A36 Bonanza
F-22 Raptor
F-35A Lightning
Fury 1500
Lockheed C69
Lockheed Electra 10A
Lockheed L049_
F-16_
Maule M7 260C
Milviz P-38L
Mooney Acclaim
Mooney Bravo
Piper Cub
Robinson R22
Sikorsky Black Hawk
Sikorsky BattleHawk
Ohio Class Submarine(!)
Neptune SRM Submersible(!)
