The Dead Men Walking council have taken the decision to move from our current VoIP solution, Teamspeak, to Discord.

The reasoning is two-fold.

1. Our Teamspeak server is currently running on our own hardware. When we suffer network problems we lose the games we host, our forum and Teamspeak. By moving to Discord (a hosted solution) we retain the ability to at least communicate updates to the membership and, of course, it's business as usual for the gamers not reliant on our hosted games.

2. Discord is now a much more mature product than when we first looked at it. It offers a raft of features that, when combined, will make it much easier for members to contact each other and get a game going.

We intend to run a small trial this week using the ARK players just to be absolutely sure that there's no real show-stoppers to the migration.

What you should do now.

Download the Discord app for your PC (phone apps are also available) - https://discordapp.com/ - and get acquainted with its interface.

When the trial with ARK players has completed successfully we will post-up details on how to join our Discord server. The server will not be password protected. Instead you will initially join as a guest with access to a single chat channel where membership can be requested. Our Discord server will be for the sole use of community members so to ensure that your request is granted quickly please ensure that your username in Discord can be easily matched to your forum handle.

This would be a good time to remind everyone that our gaming standards extend to comms. Please take the time to read this post from Tealeaf.

Great news. With easy support for both voice and text group chat this crosses the bridge between things like TS and the Google Hangouts / WhatsApp chats.

Hope the Ark trial goes well then. Glad we can agree they are indeed the community guinea pigs :norty:

Good news. I had a quick dabble with Discord and it does look a much more feature rich service than TS.

Here's hoping the Ark trail goes well. Good point Chaos, although the Arkers are used to set back and disappointment. I've read enough posts about some random Megalogiganisarus eating their whole town to realise they are quite used to it all going Pete Tong.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

Reliable in what way please?

I have had issues with TS dropping out and people dropping out and back in whereas Discord has only dropped once in all the time I have used it. My MIC also disappeared a few times but that may be my end.

I also think my mic and other people are clearer. I sound fine in Discord but tinny in TS apparently. Also a cool feature in Discord is you can change the volume of individual people so you can turn down those load or annoying. (not saying there are any here)

I have mic issues all the time in TS, kept cutting out, either that or people are iqnoring me..... :(

I came into this world with nothing,
through careful management I\'ve got most of it left.

I really dislike discord, It just feels juvenile compared to TS. It has less features, worse UI, and just ends up being cluttered with spam chat from users online and users offline using the mobile app. You also can't make the app window smaller than half a screen.

Re: spam mike, from what I can tell every channel can be muted. The idea is to have 1 main community chat channel (the Beer bar) where any and all can chat away. Yes that may at times be a bit busy, but much like the often very chatty WhatsApp we currently have for Overwatch a simple mute let's you dip in and out when you fancy. All the other chat and of course game comms takes place in other channels.

The app I can't comment on as my browsing is currently restricted to my phone! We are looking at features, in particular what we need versus what we don't use in TS. If there are essential things you think Discord is missing that TS offers it would be good to know specifics?

Yes you can make the app window smaller than half screen, I've been doing it all night at about 1/8th of full screen size.  That's the desktop app anyway.  For mobile who knows as I have not used it much, however the Discord mobile app does seem *way* better than the TS mobile app.

Your spam comment is fair I think, it provides way more info on screen than TS and some of it is not useful, so it's a lot more than we're used to seeing!  I made a comment earlier in this thread to that effect too suggesting we reduce the number of text channels, but we're trialling it and so this is probably not the final look and not the final channel set up, so it will almost certainly get cleaner.  You can also mute per channel, so if you really do not want to know then you can limit the amount you get.  TS cannot do this.

The 'less features' comment I would absolutely disagree with.   We're trialling Discord precisely because of the quantity of features it has compared to our current voice comms solution.   The comparable is the TS app (desktop or mobile) and as far as I can tell it's not even close?  Discord wins by a mile in terms of feature list.  Keep in mind that we haven't yet set up any integrations or webhooks, these will follow.

The UI is a personal thing.  I'm not a great fan of the current UI either, but I might get used to it once we have settled on our final look.   Then again we can also skin Discord so change the way it looks, so we have that option too.

Your feedback is great, but more specifics on what you did not like would help loads!

See mike, if you had that 8700k then I bet you could minimise the window too :roflmao:
