Quote from: Lysander;428370oh for god sake don't tell my wife.... how much I've spent of this technical demo (that I cannot even access).

However its not that much compared to some of the other DMW members

I wonder how much of a concern this sort of story is to the game on a larger scale? I suppose it could pose a threat, but even amounts like $25,000 seem like a drop in the pond when up against $173m. It is sad to see, though, but I can at least understand where the guy is coming from.

This will have no impact on the development of the game.

As for understanding where the guys coming from, all of his 'reasons' for wanting a refund are pure bullshit: he's simply got buyer's remorse and freaked out at how much he's spent and wants it back.

One of the main problems with this style of open development is that far too many people simply have no idea as to how a game is developed and what goes into it, or how long it really takes.  As a result, many of them have over inflated expectations as to where we should be in the development lifecycle and end up becoming entitled whiners and berating CIG for the apparent lack of progress. That's what makes me sad.

Galatoni

However you slice it though a product was put on sale. Now, yes it was a stake in development of the title, but it was put on sale none-the-less. On the other hand, noone forced him to buy either.

I can sympathise with CIG. Development isn't a straight line. Things happen and take longer than anticipated. But they also made certain assurances regarding the possible milestones which we aren't even close to now - we passed them ages ago. And its largely due to fidelity decisions made by the development team.

I'm not sure I agree that his reasons are all bull. Yes it's buyers remorse, but I think given that he still has very little actual product for his cash, that can be somewhat justified. As for far too many not understanding the process, of course that's right but these are the majority of the people putting the cash down, no? If these very same people start to see things like this, maybe they will follow in this guys footsteps. That's possibility is more what I found potentially dangerous for the game.

For sure its a bit of a grey area as you're more investing in potential as Gal says, than buying a set product. Tbh I was surprised to read refunds were even an option! I expected some terms and conditions that blocked such, but perhaps that's not a legal option for CIG.

Just speculation anyway, and I'm sure you're right and we won't see a snowball of refunds that actually causes a problem. Right now my biggest concern is that star citizen will go the way of The Last Guardian, spending so long in development by the time it releases its been left behind by other games scratching the same itch. Its a way off of that yet though, as that game spent what, a whole decade in development hell.

Yeah, I agree that CIG have been their own worst enemy at times, and I've lost count of the facepalms that I've done over how they've handled information release and/or managed player expectations.  Communication is probably their weakest attribute - and I'm not talking about the information they release about the game, that's far more than anyone else has ever done - I'm talking about communicating their reasons behind making game changing decisions, communicating about why the timescales have grown, and doing it in a timely manner.  They seem to gloss over it, when they should be reinforcing it at every opportunity.  But that's just my opinion.

Refunds are a thing, yes.  They do give refunds within the first few weeks of purchase, as require by law in most countries, but after that, they give refunds on a case by case basis.  Unfortunately for them, when it comes to the 'whales' like this guy (and a few of us on here :D) the amount involved are worthy of news headlines, so they have to read carefully in order to make sure that they don't open the floodgates; after all, the money has pretty much already been spent!

Let's just hope that 3.0 silences the majority of the doubters, and gives the rest of us something viable to play at long last.

so got the access with the rest of the minions tonight, downloaded about 35 Gb... So i started the blighter up and after a long load up time i selected the top option, i think it was centarion or something like that, after another 4..yes read 4 minutes of loading, I got into game. press h to wake up was the 1st thing i saw, well it was the only thing i saw for about 3 mins as it either lagged or gfx frames were low for it to take a while to sort itself out. Managed to get into the options and change it from high ( which was recommended) to Med, although that was a game in itself, every tine  i selected MED the FOV option below that layer on the original screen moved instead..after trying about 10 times i managed to change it and that made thing better. then there was the interface, you go up to something press f to interact then click the mouse on the item (if its a door or screen) did all that to retrieve my ship, didn't want to do anything, tried all the doors i could find, even though they had the open option, well they didn't

so after doing all that i decided to quit for the night, ill try again soon.

luckily the devs are quite active..oh no wait, there off on hols

Just had a quick 10 minutes myself just to check it out and make sure that it's all set up ok.

The game loaded to the main menu without any pause for me.  I selected Crusader and the screen went blank for about 20 seconds and then I 'woke up' in my bunk on Port Olisar.

Managed to call up an Avenger and went out to the pads, and after taking in the view of the gas giant, got into my ship. It was at this point that I realised that I had no clue how to operate anything, and my HOTAS was not hooked up (following a recent PC move), so went crashing into the station on take off and got myself a level 1 criminal status!

While in space, I left my seat, climbed into my bunk on the ship and then logged out.

It looks like I'm going to have to spend quite some time going through the key assignments and learning how to use the mobiGlas, and getting familiar with my HOTAS again as well, but all in all, it seemed smooth for me.

albert

All things that I felt my 10 or so times in the test PU. The basic keyboard and mouse controls are quite easy to learn and pleasant to use in small to medium ship s that I test drove.

The lag...gotta be first night launch overload as the game was a working alpha 2 weeks ago. Check your memory and cpu during play. Also your network use for that particular game process.

Thing that have come up with the people I've spoken to. The bad token bug. On occasion after landing or immediately after a jump, you'll become permanently desynched from the server. You'll be unable to open your mobiglass (it just raises the watch and puts it down again) and you won't be able to use any contextual options from the F key. I've had this once last night and so did sith. Only cure is relogging.

Persistence isn't across all servers yet. So if you log off, you progress is only saved on the server. So it's likely you'll need to 'claim' the ship to get it back as your current server won't know where you left your ship on the other one.

The persistence is kind of ok. We're not there yet. But mobiglass desync issue is game breaking and will likely have to be fixed soon. Fortunately we should see more of that with the delta patcher working now.

Latency is vastly improved. It's likely due to the vast numbers of people trying to download massive game files.

I did a totally clean reinstall of Star Citizen this morning and it didn't help matters.   I think I am concluding that the issue really is my PC's graphics cards.   Much as my 2GB VRAM 770 SLI set up works well enough for everything else, it is clearly not really enough for Star Citizen and particularly not at my resolution.   So I think I need to start reading up on the forthcoming Volta cards from nVidia or perhaps picking up a 1080Ti in a fire sale, although I think the chances of seeing any 1080Ti cards at greatly reduced prices are almost zero.

Given bitcoins flip flop, you might get something.

In all seriousness though, I think that the server side processing of causing a serious bottleneck. No amount of upgrades will sort that. Hopefully they'll sort that soon enough.

forgot to mention gtx 1070 with 8 gig of ram

edit: spent all morning freeing up 100gb on the ssd, turns out sc doesn't like mechanical drives, working fine now

Funny, I was just going to suggest this.

Recommended specs:
[/COLOR]
  • Windows 7 (64bit) with Service Pack 1, Windows 8 (64bit), Windows 10 â€" Anniversary Update (64bit)
  • DirectX 11 Graphics Card with 2GB RAM (4GB strongly recommended)
  • Quad Core CPU
  • 16GB+ RAM
  • SSD strongly recommended

@TeaLeaf: if I recall correctly, Star Citizen doesn't like SLI cards, and I think you'll get an improvement in performance if you disable it.

SC is very disk intensive, so I think an SSD is pretty much mandatory.
