QuoteThe legendary online FPS Counter-Strike is to receive a Souce-engine makeover and re-released this summer, Valve boss Gabe Newell revealed at E3 this morning.

Following the latest showing of numerous gameplay demos of Half-Life 2 (which will be available for download via Eurogamer later today), Newell surprised the 20-strong audience by showing off the Aztec level of Counter-Strike running in Source.

When quizzed, he said that the game would not be a free update, but would in fact be released commercially via retail and for download via Steam at the same time as Half-Life 2, at the end of this summer.

All other Half-Life content would also be made available in enhanced form, he said, including Half-Life itself, Team Fortress, Opposing Force and Blue Shift. It is not known what the retail price will be, but it is thought to be at standard budget price.

hmm, sounds interesting.

great. So now we have to pay for mods that used to be free. Excellent idea. Why didn't I think of that :(

Damn you Jamoe - you posted this just one minute before I did over in the 1.6 forum. I'm used to being outpinged in games, but on a forum? That's a new one... :P

OldBloke

I like the idea of a straight port to a new GFX engine - should mean that the gameplay stays constant with scope for more 'eye candy'.

Delivered by Steam - hmmmm. <_<

DuVeL

New stuff of CS okay, by Steam: HELP!!!!

Man, Steam is going to get a lot of money out of this. I think I'll buy a few shares in Steam if that's possible.

If Valve can deliver a new game, be HL2 or CS2, with a completely new graphics engine, then I for one will not mind handing out some money for it. If they want to deliver it through the steam engine, again I have no problem with that, it seems to work quite well as an anti piracy device, which is no doubt what Valve intended, and if a quality piece of software gets released then all those involved should be paid for it.

DogMeat

Quality?  This is Valve we're talking about here... <_<

Saw the Eurogamer vid.  Hot damn!  Aztec looks purtier than a real purty thing, with CS running on the source engine.

I'm with Zok, in that I will have no qualms in handing over some hard-earned for CS2 (or whatever they're going to call it) if it's going to look like that.  However, this is Valve we're talking about, and we can only hope that they don't manage to somehow bork the gameplay in doing the translation.

Released via Steam though?  Oooh nasty...

It's not CS2 - It's CS: Source (Or CSS for maximum confusion).
