I am fed up of my current job, i think that im ready for a change and would like to try something computer related.. does anybody have any ideas on what would be a good area to get into and doesnt require a long time to learn.
There are quite a lot of college courses and internet based courses but there are so many to choose from.
I was thinking of doing a basic repair course to start with but so many people are doing this already that to beat my current wage would be hard.
And too many people are doing web designing that the wages suck.
Any ideas please reply.
Cheers Mick.....................

Sorry to hear that oldie..but with the knowledge you have already you should be OK to find a job. just dont rest your hopes on FrEnZy supporting you any time soon eh!
The only reason im for looking for a different career now is that it is probably my last chance to do something i have any type of interest in. if i dont try soon it will be too late, then i will be trapped by the kids syndrome  :(
(work in a crappy job you dont enjoy just to keep a roof over the kids)

Why did I not go into geology and work for a big phat rich oil company....

Well it didnt take long i was waiting for someone to take the piss

So nobody knows of any good courses worth taking?

TeaLeaf

My brother concentrates on networks (not the software side though) and first did yee oldie MCSE and then went on and did CCIE - there seems to be a good bit of money there.  He's now doing Security stuff and reckons it's worth even mo' money.  Why not look into that type of thang :?:

courses are ok but nowadays everyone wants experience.
i'm in tech support and recently did my win 2k mcp exam, easy to pass but without proper experience not worth a toss !!.
up till 3 years ago i was a warehouse supervisor and at 32 years old i decieded to change my career.  the only way to do it is start at the bottom in computing and if you get a lower salary for a start you can get the company to sort you out training as part of your package when you think that most training for a weeks course is about a grand, 2 or 3 courses a year make it a bit more worthwhile!!
trouble is at the moment the TANGO has dropped out of the pc industry new tecchies are getting about 13,500-15,000 which sucks
i was unhappy for ages and bored, and changing is real good esp if its something that you like doing but as you get older ya gotta think carefully.
also in IT the turnover of staff has slowed right down so the juicy jobs now aren't coming up as often.
good luck and dont rush to a decision choose carefully now and you'll be set for a good run at whatever you do.
here endeth the twopence worth, hope it helps

Cheers guys,
I was going to look at MCSE just for a starter but ive been told that too many people go for it nowadays so it doesnt mean as much as it used to.
But yes experience is what people are after, ive tried phoning around quite a few companies to see if they have any type of "on job training" programs. i dont mind dropping money as long as i have a goal to work to ie:- start on this and in a year you will be on this, but people dont want to take on and train any more they just want experience.
I am getting job offers now in what i currently know and do but i dont want to carry on with this, if im going to change job i want to change career.

What really pisses me off is that my missus is in "IT" working for an insurance company and hates it. she started off in claims and just got moved into "IT" and wasnt happy about it, but now that they have paid for her to go on numerous courses costing thousands over the past few years and she has doubled the wages she is on, she still doesnt want to do it. Give me the bloody job then moaning COW. :x

OHhh jobs arnt they fun. they start off well earning lots of money, going out spending loads on your mates, looking cool driving around in nice brand new cars then what happens they go and TANGO up the thing you tried to make better so that you dont have time to have a life, just running around with no head while shagging a chicken(i think is how you put it)
well i say quit your job live on the dole get that dress on and earn some money on the street corners i am sure that you would make quite a bit of money doing that especially around cambridge there all a bit queer round there (yes tut that is you).
And yes if there is a job going i will have it, i bet it isnt that hard to do your doing it arnt you
