Now that I have your attention.............. :)

I want to get some feedback on some of the language used in the forum

More and more I'm coming across words such as

feck
fecking
sh1te
shite
biatch
cnut

etc.

From my stand it seems to be getting worse and I think we should come up with a uniformed positioning on it so that there is a continuity in moderation across the forum as a whole.

As moderators - i.e. the forums eyes and ears - this has a direct impact on you so I'm coming to you for your thoughts.

I appreciate it's all very subjective and that everyone will have different view on acceptability, but we need to come up with a consensus.

Over to you :)

To deal with specific words then I think 'feck' is ok as it was coined by Father ted (or the old guy whose name I have forgotten!)

To deal generically, one has to look at the tone of the conversation and also what is acceptable 'outside' deadmen.co.uk.  When I mean outside I mean other sites which we know to be of high standard when it comes to swearing and content etc.

I guess we could start looking at sites such the BBC?  Would they accept the word sh1te?

While many of us would use words such as the above in conversation with our peers (thinking of the LAN coming up when Pen gets headied with a Deagle :narnar:) the language there would be acceptable, but on the public forums where anyone could read the post? Probably not.

Runs off to check personal posts lol :norty:

On the one hand i have no problem with it but on the other surely its bypassing swear filters.

I'd say pen at the lan have a sit down and ask TL and OB what they would like us to do.

Personally we do have people on here who are polite and courteous but remember their are a couple of people who are under 18.

It may also be a consequence of lan's. Say for instance i have a chat with person A and i enjoy conversation regular and light hearted banter in real life or over comms or evenat the lan. Surely this should be allowed to a point on the forum too.

I can see your point if it's friendly banter then its fine.

To be honest i am unsure how we should approach this but would rather an official "yes" or "no" be made by either yourself pen or by a senior admin so we all know where we stand.

I mean seriously though what age is the forum's captive audience thats what we need to ask our selves or the level of reading age we provide.

We did discuss an adult section on the forum not "adult" but i mean many light hearted banter not for under 18's

My name is Paul and I'm a fecking gobshite of a bhiatch.....   oh, sorry wrong forum.

I think we need to be careful not to get too moderated.  I agree with Pen that we need to watch what is said, but let's not turn this forum into a non-fun place.  It's up to moderators to decide if the context allows the words.  If it offends you then it has crossed the line and should be moderated.  Apply common sense, I'd rather avoid a list of acceptable words or non-acceptable words.

If we get problems with a particular word then we can use the admin's word filter and get it auto changed on posting to something else.  If you spot a regular offender let Pen or me know and we'll come up with a suitably amusing auto-replacement word.

If we get problems with a particular person then we can examine GhostMjr's LAN hard drive to show us that the problem person we thought we had is not as bad as it could be. :P

Read the post, if it feels wrong then just send them a PM and ask them to amend the language used.  If they do not then moderate it.  But let's not get everyone feeling that they are being watched, this is meant to be fun!

my father is from southern Ireland and he never swears......, he does though say feck which he has used sunce his teens and as many people "down South" agree its not a swear word

Sulky drops his 2p into the container.

i agree with the above, if it is in the right  context then it should be alright, i say s**t instead of what  it should be, and as we are all old enough to know what cnut means then surley we are old enough to know that we if we actually do write the word the correct way then we will get in trouble.

ok puts 2p more into the pot

You kinda missed the point Ghosty.  I pretty much know what their take on it will be as much as I know full well what Doorman's take on it is. It's your thoughts I was exploiting...That's why I posted it here.

Crudely, If I wanted their thoughts I would have posted it in the Head/Section Head Admin section.

Again It's not their thoughts I'm interested in at the minute... it's yours. It's a discussion point not a yes or no or a call-to-arms. I'm interested in your opinions as stakeholders. There's a pool of 20 or so long-term and respected member here and  I'm interested in what you have to say. You are allowed an opinion.

At the end of the day I just wanted to get some feedback on what you though but crickey, if I'd know it'd be this much trouble....:eyebrow:

I'm trying not to take exception to Sulky's remarks (about his dad from S. Ireland, btw, thats Rep. of Ireland) and the inference that we Oirish use language unsuited to the common good. We do, but we think that its a common denominator.

Nevertheless, I think that all of the above expressions are used in everyday conversation, and not in the least offensive, bar one.  For instance, biatch, a derivative of bitch, used mainly (and  introduced by, I believe)  African-Americans, whom you are not allowed to call Blacks or Negroes. Notice your reaction when you read these words, for words they are, not insults, not denigrations, just words. Descriptions.

Honestly, in my lifetime reading this forum, I have never seen the word "cnut", nor any other spelling of it. If spelt correctly, I would find it offensive, but thats just me. Well, maybe not just me, I don't know anyone who uses that word at all at all.

I have a notion of what Pen is trying to get at: the misuse of extreme language. I guess we should have to use our collective heads here, sh1te=crap, effluent, Feck, Fecking=Father JACK (not Ted).

I know that I use inappropriate language on comms sometimes, something I am instantly sorry for, but, its an emotion, it pops out. And, before you say "say it to yourself, not on comms", well, the moment has passed, deed is done, habit is pressing the button for VC. My only saving grace is that I've never said "cnut" or any derivitive.

I do not know any 11-15 year old who hasn't used any of the words listed, with the exception of the "cnut" word and its derivatives,  I would be surprised if any of the said age group would deny it.

Censorship was rampant in this country until the 1990's. Maybe that is what makes me feel this way. For God's sake, Ulysses, the book by James Joyce, an Irish literary giant, was banned here!! Because it contained a phalanx of swearwords, it was banned!! A literary masterpiece! It was actually against the law to own a copy!

Again, my opinion. A forum is where you are supposed to be able to vent your spleen, to express your feelings, hopes, wishes, and, if you're completely honest, take a biatch aside and tell him what a sh1te he is.

Have fun at the lan, I'm feckin jealous, you lucky biatches!

EDIT: Oh yeah, Smilo, if you see that black-knickered inbred hairdresser at the lan, give "her" a large, wet, gooey lick from me?

you just try it Smilo.. you get anywhere near me and I'll slap you one :D

I'd like less policing but agree that overall we need to be mindful and respectful of each other. If someone complains about the language used in one post or another then the post should be modified and the poster told that someone found it offensive.

Let's not get too draconion about the whole thing tho.

it wasnt meant as an insult or anything else mate. It was just a statement of fact that's what my olde dad does and from a conversation we had a couple of years ago after watching kuffs(film with chriatian slater) when the cop in the middle of the film says the f word for about 30 seconds, i found it funny he didnt. he then gave me a half hour lecture on the virtues of he upbringing and the lack of swearing in the republic. I do remember the state censership that also went on, from my many visits to tipperary(inset joke long way yawn...) and from watching RTE.

liking it to the itv censership of films in the early 90's on itv times 10, rememeber bruse willis in die hard saying yippy kiyay m.f. badly dubbed by itv  to yippy kiyay (insert differant voice) kimo sabi, well that was nothing.

anyway no offense was meant, as for the forums if ppl use bad words then they should be warned but we want the forums to be fun so i would suggest using the moderators crayon sparingly and only using it against harse offenders.

Jeebus.

This is easy. Don't be offensive. Don't mention language, but if you call me a c**t then that would be offensive. If you say you had a sh*t day then fair enough.

It's not bloody newsnight.
