Get Windows 7 for Ã,£30

Microsoft has announced that it will offer Windows 7 Home Premium pre-orders to UK university students for just Ã,£30 from 1 October.

The software giant says the offer is designed to coincide with the start of the new academic year and will enable university students to upgrade to the latest operating system.

The offer is open to any UK student with a valid university or college email address (i.e. an email address ending in .ac.uk) and will expire on 3 January 2010, at which time the costs will revert to their normal prices.

Students "will benefit from many of Windows 7's unique functions and applications which make PCs easier, simpler and more fun to use," said Microsoft in a statement.

The company added that there will also be a special promotional price for Windows 7 Professional as well, but hasn't said how much thus far. We were unable to reach Microsoft for further comment at the time of publication. Details will presumably pop up on the Student pre-order website nearer to the offer's start date.

Hmm Ã,£30 sick! Wonder if students can buy more than one copy?

Was about to post a link to this nice bit of news for students when I noticed the most important bit (before people go crazy and start ordering)...

QuoteMany college and university students can already get Windows 7 Professional for free through the MSDN Academic Alliance (MSDNAA) but this is offer is aimed at those who cannot. This deal reminds us most of the Ultimate Steal discounts for Microsoft Office the company also offers to students.

A quick check on my uni's AA portal shows Window 7 Professional available for download, so I got my key already and will be grabbing a copy when I get home. :D

As I understand it, however, the MSDNAA keys are single use only. So sure, while you're a student, if you want to reinstall your OS you can just grab another key. When you stop being a studnet, however, you're stuffed. With the Ã,£30 version you get the full version of the OS, so can reinstall to your heart's content.

I'll be buying the Ã,£30 version. I'm on a free version of vista I got from a friend who did computer science which had access to all these free softwares, that still works and they've finished their degree. I don't think it's limited to the time at uni, though you might be talking about something different to me. The version I have has been reinstalled with the same key at least 4 times.

THis is really interesting. Well my graduation date is after this date so fingers crossed they don't delete my uni email a/c and i will snap it up for Ã,£30

I will cancel my pcworld Ã,£89.99 as soon as i get the Ã,£30 offer.

Nice find chaps!

Do we get a CoA and box with cd aswell?

Have a read of the EULA and terms of the educational license. Most likely it's not valid after you graduate. Can you live with yourself :g:

Buying it after you graduate, maybe. But there's a whole load about how it's the full unrestricted version when you buy it. Same with Office 2007 from the ultimate steal. It says clearly it's not limited to your time in education.

My Ã,£89.99 windows 7 deal from pcworld just arrived.

I thought it wasn't suppose to be dispatched till 21st or later.

Ok on the box it says dvd included: 32-bit and 64 bit discs inside

So confirms what Oldy said possible move from 64 to 32 bit allowed.

On the box it also says

QuoteIf you are upgrading from windows xp you will need to back up your files and settings, perform a clean install and then reinstall existing firels, settings and programs

So it's not saying 'Geddoutta here, it's not the 22nd' then? (see another thread somewhere)
