I'm tempted to get myself an HTC Desire when it's released next week. Devicewire are flogging it for Ã,£369.95 which is actually cheaper than the Hero was a year ago and about Ã,£150 cheaper than the Nexus One on which it is based.

I can get Ã,£125.00 trade in on my Hero which means I'm looking at shelling out Ã,£240ish quid for this one. Hmmmmmmmmm. :g:

It's a good jump going to a 1Ghz processor. It'll also have 2.1 Android which sounds like it's worth having. Whether you think it's worth the cash is up to you, it's essentially the hero still, no huge technological leaps.

Yeah I have had my eyes on it for a bit... best specs, but far from the same beauty as the Legend... that thing does look sweet. Also, I would really want the large HD2-screen and now that this has come in the Evo 4G phone as well, perhaps it is worth the wait...

The Legend is even closer to the Hero's specs so I can't justify the expense for the relatively small boost to power. I agree though it is a very attractive phone. However I guess that's why I never went for the iPhone. A smartphone has to be more than eye wateringly beautiful, it has to have function as well. The Desire is twice as powerful as the Hero. Even with the tweaks I've done to the Hero it's working at the limit of it's hardware. I just meed MORE power!

The iPhone never allows more than one app to run at a time and so always maintains it's silky smooth responsiveness. The Hero is a proper multitasker but suffers from a reduction in performance as a result. I hoping the Desire will be both smooth and powerful. If it is, then I think it could be the first true 'Superphone' - to coin a phrase from Google. Obviously the Nexus One came first but the Nexus and Desire are both more or less the same phone with the Desire having Sense UI and a much more respectable price tag.

Of course I'll still root it and install a custom ROM just to make it even better

well I had put the wifes HTC HD2 order on hold due to being on hoiliday in Ireland and they couldnt get it to us b4 we went, would it be more prudent to go for the desire or stick with the HD2 due to the screen size and the way HTC has managed to hide windows mobile?

any thoughts?

Android all the way for me. Seamless integration with Google mail/calendar is such a joy.

My only concern would be the appearance of Windows Series 7 Mobile Seven Series Mobile thing   or whatever they decide to call it. Would you get the update and if so would it break HTC's UI and therefore even be possibe? If I was a WinMo user I might try to hold out for Windows Mobile 7.

A purely personal opinion is that Android is a better OS than Windows Mobile 6.5 plus Sense UI, but that is a very subjective and personal opinion.

What's the opinion on Sony's X10? Looks pretty nice to me :-)

Before my Hero, I had a WinMo phone, and Android is better in every way. When you have a choice between the two I'd go the android route.

I hear it has no multi touch and comes with Android 1.6. That seems hard to believe now that 2.1 is standard

Im thinking of selling my HTC HD2 if your interested Sulky, can't really use it in the states :)

My dad was so unhappy about his Blackberry (they honestly are terrible, worst phone I've used) that he talked T-Mobile into offering him a new phone. He had a Choice of a samsung, the HD2 or the Desire. I recommended the latter and he's going to have a desire arrive this weekend. I'll let you know what I think because I happen to be be going back home this week for a wedding anyway.

No, it's 1.6. It is sadly quite common...
