From an idea by TL in the Best 5 Games Ever thread:

What was the the one thing in a single particular game that really blew you away - was it AI, graphics, location, whatever? One game, one thing?

For me it was the original Tomb Raider. There was a level where you arrived in an underground cavern on top of a Sphinx's head and it was the most amazingly huge level I had ever seen in a game. Just awesome looking around what appeared to be a vast sprawling cavern.

Damn forgot about Tomb Raider.

That was by far the best game i have played yet... the rest in the line were no where near.

And yes BB that was superb.

GhostMjr

D day landings in MOHAA that was superb!

Maus

Y'know, scratch that. I'm sure there are better ones. *ponders*

OldBloke

Serious Sam's outdoor Egyptian-style locations were fantastic.

(Bugger - forgot about SS in my list)

And the first time I walked on the beach in Far Cry - wonderful.

Dr Sadako

Tough one. Return to castle wolfenstein was really good. The mood was superb and the graphics at the time outstanding. Remeber the graveyard and going into that tomb ... scary. But I must say that it must be the old UT for the first online gaming experience for me. Even though it was only 56K, it was magic. I was hooked on online gaming ever since.

Aye...that was the first proper PC game i ever played and got hooked.

Morpheus....sniper......  I could have fun on that map for hours.
It was superb to see it brought back for UT2004.

Whitey

Links 486.

Yeh seriously..  I had an Amiga at the time with some great games: Elite, Cannon fodder ...  But the Desktop manager at work had put a copy of Links 486 on one of the new fangled DX's,  it looked great and played even better.  I spent many a lunch time  playing it and it made me buy my first PC (about £2000 worth at the time).  Oh how things have moved on, but I've never been as blown away by a game since.

Cadaver

Resident Evil on the Playstation.

Hammy voice acting aside, when played in a dark room with the sound up, this game had the ability to make you physically jump in your seat when something ambushed you.  Set in a creepy manor house with loads of zombies and other nasties, this game had atmosphere like nothing else I've played since.
