I think open headphones sound fantastic - usually better then the closed equivalents.

The sound leakage can be really bad though, and that's a deal breaker for me.

I think it depends on the situation, in the office no, but at home it ok!

In fact you could argue that gaming at home *requires* the open design as they are much more comfortable during extended wear sessions.

From my limited experience with open headphones (one cheap pair) I am not sure if the comfort is any better than my considerably more expensive closed ones. Is this just down to the lack of insulation meaning less "hot ear" and more room inside of the ear cups?

I am very tempted to get some more premium open headphones as SR850's punch above their weight (I would have expected to pay about £100 for the sound quality I am getting for £30) but they are not quite at the same level as my AKG's which I love for Music. Saying that these are fine for CS:GO and FPS which is what IO bought them for as I do like some good bass when listening to music but that is a personal preference.

Perhaps I may **** everyone off by coming to the October LAN with Open headphones... =)

Edit: http://www.audiocheck.net/soundtests_headphones.php The Binaural Test is out of this world on my Open headphones compared to the closed ones. Really sounds real in a immersive way... Crazy!

Ive got the SR850s and found that the bass improves considerably over time. They say a 200 hour burn in before fully loosened up.

I tried a pair of Grado 80i open headphones that I use with my HiFi in the Lounge and placed a desktop mic just below my monitor.

About open back phones I would say it depends very much on how loud they are to the surrounding area.

My mic was picking up everything from the phones. I never tried a lapel mic which I will do soon as I ordered one.

Certainly the open phones are more natural sounding.

I actually think the comfort factor is most important to me rather than open or closed.

I've always owned closed gaming phones that cover the ear fully and get hot in summer.

I didn't find any particular issue with sound leakage with the HD668B.  Someone sitting next to me couldn't hear anything.

As a mic I use(since 2009) the logitech usb desk mic; it's cheap, its good, and has a mute button.  No complaints whatsoever.

@DZ the modmic 4 actually comes with 2 fasteners not one. The mic is very good and far better than an old clip on I had before it broke.

BrotherTobious

I use mine at the LAN and it doesn't disturb anyone.

i stick by my hyperx cloud headset no sound leakage at all, in fact i have to remove them sometime to hear people cause of the noise canceling.

Everyone else is probably using Closed Cups vs your Open ones; )
Did you sit next to anyone else using Open Cups while using yours?

BrotherTobious

I sat next to Ninja_Freak,  tl and I have sat next to pen. I have had them for several years

5 for 5 with my current setup of DAC/AMP and SR850's. Need to burn them in though, they are getting better with him but I am getting an odd click in the left ear-cup every now and then.

Interesting.

So we have a few avid LAN goers with no issues with open headsets.

The wife is always complaining I can't hear her with my closed ones at home (some might say this is a feature ;) ) so might have to invest in some open ones as well now!
