I've been sceptical up to this point, but it's pretty clear now that the TV show has surpassed the rather dodgy writing in the later books.

What they're doing with the story is leaner, meaner and utterly gripping. Great stuff :)

I agree that episode was much much better but to waste 7 odd hours of build up to that. Last season was filled better.

Looking forward to the last 2 but it has been the weakest season for me so far

I'm with you Toby.

I didn't find it that enthralling. better but nothing compared to previous seasons.

So who caught the cameo of last nights episode? ;)

I must agree with most of you here though. So far this season has been two and a half, maybe three, good fight/battle scenes. The rest just feels like filler content and a really slow build up. The previous seasons were a lot more exciting.
Well, what was being hinted at happened, too bad I think it will be for naught as I don't see Stannis being Azor Ahai.  Explosive scene in the end 20 mins or so.

I'm wondering why people reacted so loudly to the wedding night scene, but no one even cares when a little girl got burnt alive.

The battle at the end of the episode was pretty epic though :)
Without doubt that was highly uncomfortable to watch, but it was also part of the storyline so expected/needed/predictable (use your own preferred word).   It was key to the story, unlike the previously debated episode where the scene added nothing that we did not already know - and it repeated an earlier tendency of the show's producers to throw in additional (Jamie/Cersei) scenes to no end, which I think is why people are more sensitive to it.

My questioning of it was more from the "why was the scene needed" end of the spectrum, to me it smacked of being in there for pure shock value only.  Much like the Jamie/Cersei scene.  Neither were key to the storyline (in fact, given that they were at that point still mostly following the books, the Jamie/Cersei one was so far off it as to be laughable) and neither added much if anything to the series other than the shock value.  Last night's scene was 'nasty' but it was at least part of the story being told, and a somewhat critical one at that.

That would be my guess as to why nobody has commented on it.  :2cents:

It didn't add anything, but it wasn't like it was a complete stretch of the characters involved. What surprised me the most about it was that people reacted so strongly to it. Not the scene itself. But then I have learnt that GoT are trying to shock their audience and push the limits of their viewers.

I think that's the quality of the story that's meant to do that, not the special effects! :P

The story is very good though, and my only real complaint is the pace of the current season. I guess I will have to read the books when they are finished, to see how the story was supposed to go though.

The books at this point are even slower, although the story goes off in a very different direction...

Gorion
The end scene was expected.  He should be resurrected, either by Mel, or some other means..

Reek finally manned up, and stannis was expected as he is not azor ahai.  Mel only sees snow (Jon?) when she asks Rhollor for guidance.

Dragon queen will probably gain a new army, and possibly a new husband..
